and honestly swapping the heads and all manifolds are really quite simple (mind you i would say that im a mechanic by trade lol)if you need any help or advise give me a shout!

yeah EGR might get removed while im at it.

can anyone tell me which handed thread the crankshaft bolt is and how you locked the engine up to get it undone?

read someones guide that said to use the alt/air con pump stay bar but cant see how this is done.

              thanks in advance.

                Having just done all this......

The bolt is a RH thread (anti clock to remove) I used a heavy duty strap wrench around the bottom pulley

                  thanks mate.

well its taking way longer than what i expected but then what doesnt.

im ready to take the head off now but find i need spline sockets to remove the head bolts. they seem to be around 15/16mm. can anyone confirm this as ill need tp pick a set up from halfrauds tomorrow.

I've just used a normal 14mm socket (not the hex socket) when i take the head bolts out and use a big breaker bar aswell

                      thanks.

id prefer to use the right socket though. ill just pick up a set.

What he meant is a 12 point socket. The 6 point (hex) will not work.

                                little update.
with having to work outside and only on weekends ive finally got the head off. good news is that the head is fine with no cracks evident and seems in good condition. piston #1 look almost brand new, i wouldnt say its been in there for almost 200k miles. #2 is good with very slight pitting of the crown as are 3 and 4. the head gasket had cracked at cylinder #2. the block surface has been cleaned up nice and is ready for the new gasket. ive also swapped out the water pump although the old one is also in good condition. its almost like new as is the old tensioner and timing belt so i think someones clearly done work on the motor in the last few thousand miles since before i bought it although i got no mention or paperwork for that from the previous owner. i think ill still swap the head with the one i bought from chewee and just clean up my old one to sell or keep as a spare. i need to pick up a new set of glow plugs tomorrow as i may as well replace them too. ive never bought glow plugs before so can anyone tell me what to get please?

on this EGR thing, what does EGR stand for and what does it do exactly?
im considering leaving it out but would like to know its purpose first as most info on it that ive read points out that they dont know if your any more or less likely to suffer a head problem as a result of removing.

as mentioned above i had a helper last weekend who had removed a lot of the smaller pieces from the engine like vacuum hoses, fuel lines and electrical connections as well as nuts and bolts from various parts of the turbo and alternator so i may require some graciously appreciated assistance in identifying and reconnecting these parts.

ive also discovered that the air con has been removed from the truck with all components gone from the bay right up to the unions on the bulkhead. im not sure if theres supposed to be anything in the cab but wondered how hard it is to refit a replacement system and the associated cost of doing so.

im praying for lots of progress tomorrow as im really finding it hard being off road in this fashion rather than in the true meaning of the expression.
