Update.
Got the recond rad back on Friday so Ive had a couple of days to check it out.
The temperature was normal on Friday but the rad was stone cold. The system did not have any air in it and caused concern. At first I just thought that the rad had just split under the symptom of old age. It was the thermostat stuck shut. Looks like I was very lucky it did'nt cause more damage. The rad has been upgraded to a four core which meant the top and bottom tanks had to be widened to accommodate the extra core. The rad cowl will have to be modified to fit back snugly.I was going to mod the top of the cowl anyway, so as to make cleaning the rad easy. It is approx 0.25" closer to the engine so it is even harder to do up those fan nuts now.
The temperature needle now sits to the left of the centre white line and shows a small portion of black between needle/white line. It has never done this in two years so I think it is safe to say it is running cooler.
I chose to leve the oil cooler in the rad and when next towing the caravan I will closley monitor it.
The price of the upgraded rad was £150 + vat.

Geoff,
Thats good news. I have been doing some further sniffing around. I went to Serck Intertruck today in Hayes, they have provisionally quoted £235.00 + vat to do the same job. Stretch teh tanks, squeeze in a 4 core element, strengthen all the pressed in ridges, and additionally remove/move the gearbox cooler from the lower tank to add a separate cooler (approx £40.00 + vat for a 13core oil cooler). That works out at about £326.00 all in. 4 days to complete.
Coincidentally, a HiLux/Surf Rad element is identical across the board (according to these guys). Three core, 475mm x 525mm x 47mm (give or take), so any rad with a mullered core will do/fit... three core, £185.00 + vat, still a bit pricey, and John may be more in a position to do a deal for forum members, just wanted to double check the price.
So, are you going to try the higher pressure Rad cap?

only quoting what the chap at Serck told me... obviously he hasn't seen that many hilux and/or surf radiators...
So, how did bundunasher squeeze a 5 core radiator in then?
***Edit
So the mounting points look the same on both... will the 3.0TD fit in a 2.4...?
Or does the lower panel below the rad need modifying...

Of course, agreed. Whole point of a forum to get a consensus on what does, or doesn't work.
TonyN, you got the measurements on the 3.0td rad, both the core and the external dimensions?
2.4td does have the sump guard with the vents in the front and underneath. 3.0td's have aircon as well, so where is their aircon rad? Just wonder if it is possible to fit it in. The australians mention fitting the 2.8td rad... apparently their rad is larger than the 2.4td...? From your comments, it would appear that the 3.0td is larger again then... anyone else got any ideas?
as with any of my other mods, I can only afford to do this once, and I don't want to visit cooling problems again...

Give a couple of days, and I can measure both the 3.0 and 2.4 Rad properly. Seeing Shelley tomorrow, so might be able to measure the V6 UK 4Runner as well.
I also know 2 people with 2.8lt (non turbo though) pickups, might be able to get measurements.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...
