Don't be tempted to put any direct voltages to the pump, I think they're all regulated.

A little afterthought regarding dust/dirt getting in anywhere while the motor is stripped. I wrapped clingfilm or plastic bags over each orifice as they were revealed, I also cleaned all carbon and gasket remnants from both head and block, blew it all clean with canned air from photography dealers and sprayed wd40 on a rag then wiped the lot down before covering with a teatowel weighed down with the old gasket, all things I watched the older brother do on his 1970 cooper s, gotta keep it clean in there. Is it going yet?

Running now.....sort of.
New problem.
Took out wee filter as described by Rich, little bit of soft gunk, nothing really, cleaned off the fuel temp assembly and replaced filter, when we at first unscrewed this from the side of pump only a little fuel came out, when wee gauze filter came out a lot of fuel did too.
The truck started and ran after cracking each injector in turn, it revved cleanly and would tick over for a while, engine light on dash would flash orange and engine spluttered to a stop, difficult to restart.
Changed fuel filter and poured redex into pipe, cracked injectors and checked for fuel at each one, all ok, engine started.......then stopped....then would start but die again at idle.
Unplug ECU check all connections, recheck injectors, fired up and ran sweet, ticked over, went for a run came back left on tick over.
Stopped, restarted ok, went to drive home all ok.
Driving at steady 30 then lifted off coming down hill and engine cut out, unplug ECU, engine would start and run if held on revs but as soon as I try to idle it it dies.
Dunno what to do next?Alan

Not checked for fault code yet, will do tomorrow
Cleaned out the filter twice Tony, nothing there the second time.
I just noticed I put the wave washer in the wrong place, it should be behind the filter and not in front, it's so thin, surely this couldn't be the cause?
I'll put it in the right place tomorrow.Alan

wouldn't have thought it would effect how it runs, its just won't have sealed the filter properly thats all.
does fuel come out the filter hole if you pump the primer, if to try removing the spill control valve, then see if you can pump fuel to that hole, thats the last place before it goes up the pipes to injectors.
Check the spill control valve is getting 3-5V across the pins of the plug with the ignition on, if you have it out you can feel it click if its working, and should spit a little fuel out end.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

Getting plenty of fuel out of the filter hole if primer is pumped.
Could air getting into pump or another part of the system cause the shutdown I am getting.
It's weird how it runs so sweet and then just chucks it.Alan

Its on the back of the pump pointing up, its in the pic but not labelled.
The timer control valve will reliably show a fault code if duff, its often hard to fix on 2.4's with a used pump often only answer.
Tank vacuum as Vince mentioned in other post is a good one, try it without the fuel filler cap on.
Also, not idling and running rough is often the shutdown valve staying on while truck is running, double check all the hoses in the other thread that I answered, and try reversing the two hoses to the UFO shaped bit. The valve could be trying to choke the motor if its working backwards.
I'll double check Bobs truck i have here tomorrow with the head off in case I didn't get it right from memory the other night.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

I checked the vac hoses again, I did cable tie the spare one that would have gone to EGR and checked positions against workshop manual.
I tried to run with cap off and on, no difference.
When it did run it was running perfect, better than ever, then just give a cough and splutter and die. It ran for 10 minutes at least and drove perfectly.
most annoying.Alan
