Looks familiar..i got a group of us stuck down a narrow lane a few months ago..again MM showed the lane, it was legal mind, but a road to nowhere and very tricky to back up (2" either side onto stone walls..if your lucky). I had reccy'd most of the routes we took, but you cant do them all.

90% of my local lanes aren't listed on wayfinder, so its a case of turning up and hunting for clues, obvious signs (placed by councils), does it look used etc..

Just a thought, but perhaps for the farmer in question trucks turning up in his back garden was a regular event, as was people wanting to use his drive to escape a tough bit of laning. It seems the chap has pointed out the correct route and then got arsey when you wanted to use his drive instead.

I can only say (if this WAS a regular happening) then I too would probably be p1ssed off. (My driveway doubles as foot access to some other houses, I drew the line at one of the neighbours kids kicking a ball up and down it. It's ACCESS, not their garden - and I'd be murdering them if they were driving 4x4s up it every weekend!)

It's easy to say with hindsight, and very few of us do this, but maybe the route should have been reccied / walked by someone in advance of driving it.

If it was really as bad as it sounds, it probably isn't driven much, if at all, so may not actually be a legal route and laners regularly get as far as the farm before bailing out and legging it down this guys drive.

Having said that though, as someone else said, farmers tend to be open to being bunged a few quid to make problems go away.

This reminds me of something my Dad told me...
Apparently my Granddad was driving home in his Ford Anglia one day and it was really foggy.. another driver had been following his tail lights. My Grandfather arrived home and parked up only to hear the other driver shouting “Hey, don’t just stop keep going, keep going”....... to which my Granddad shouted back “sorry mate, I’m going in for my dinner, oh and BTW I’m parked in my driveway”.

The other driver had only gone and followed him up his drive way
Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL

Personal abuse aside, Matt is right, ingorance is no excuse, in the eyes of the law, or just common decency. The onus is on you to be sure you have access, at all times. If you get caught, then you are entirely in the hands of the landowner, he can be reasonable, or an ass.

The former is easier to deal with, but if its happened a lot he's probably at the end of his tether and just wants it stopped by what ever means he thinks appropriate at the time.

What Tony said. If you want to know where you can drive, buy a map.
In Scorpion's case, it was more of a query (why didn't you go back the way you came?) than any kind of damnation.

That lane doesn't look that impassable, but I wasn't there. Sounds like an unpleasant situation is all I'm saying and I know Jim will have learned a lesson.

                    fair comment mate.
however IF this is an ongoing thing for the farmer, then its not hard to put up a clear sign is it? despite wether he should or shouldnt feel obliged to do.

He doesn't need a sign, he came out of his house and said it was private.

maybe im confused then coz i thought they were on a track NEXT to his property and that they need to go ONTO his property to get out safely?

That's right. I'm just saying he doesn't need a sign because he walks out of his house and says "you can't go up there, it's private". Not as efficient as a sign, obviously, but just as good and almost certainly better.

right, let me try and explain
the lane ended IN his front garden/ driveway/ acces to his garage and picked up again at the other side of it.
Now what was his land was questionable.
He didnt have a problem with us crossing over to pick up the start of the lane at the other side.
What the problem was that one of our party did not want to continue, rather to miss out the 2nd bit and leave the lane, via this chaps driveway/private road.
All prevoius comments still apply, I just wanted to clarify.

BTW - he wasnt that bothered and i spoke to him on the way out, storm in a tea cup springs to mind
                            sorry jim.

Again just enquiring, was his yard not big enough to turn around in?
