Hehehe, yeah I wondered why that stick cost all that money, must be special wood?....
seriously though, the web site suggested using a metal coat hanger ( unwound) and use this to trim to the correct lenght, and then once SWR is ok trim the antenna to that length.
Now maybe I'm missing the point, but;
1( if a coat hanger works, why did I buy an antenna?
2) anybody got a 5' coat hanger I can borrow?
Oh, and if it is a ground plane problem, how can I confirm that?Rob

I was under the impression that a mag mount ( which is what I have) should get a good ground plane from the car body, even though this one comes with a rubber boot to protect paintwork, it should be idiot proof.
I have even tried SWRing it in on different frequencie, ie UK, and euro channels.Rob

I took it off, just to see if it was the problem, made no difference.
I can't remember having any problems with mobile antennae before, they'd SWR up in about 5 mins, I even checked the instructions to make sure I was using the meter right, but making the antenna shorter or longer on the adjuster made no difference to the SWR, so I guess I may have a tech/mech prob with the areil/lead/mount.
I used to run a mobile ariel on a mag mount stuck to a biscuit tin on my bedroom floor ( back in '81) and that worked fine.Rob
