I can't remember having any problems with mobile antennae before, they'd SWR up in about 5 mins, I even checked the instructions to make sure I was using the meter right, but making the antenna shorter or longer on the adjuster made no difference to the SWR, so I guess I may have a tech/mech prob with the areil/lead/mount.
I used to run a mobile ariel on a mag mount stuck to a biscuit tin on my bedroom floor ( back in '81) and that worked fine.
Try this http://www.translatorscafe.com/cafe/...cy-wavelength/ to sort out what length you need for 1/8th wavelength. Anything bigger than this is gonna be too big for mobile use really. Beware of base loading as that affects the apparent length at RF.
If it's pretuned, you shouldn't really have a problem. Check your cable, you may have reflections if you've a) Got wrong impedance cable b) made a less than ideal job of fitting connector either end c) got any really tight bends / pinches in the cable.Cutting steps in the roof of the world
