So... is anyone using unleaded as a thinner rather than white spirit? What are the pros and cons of each, or is it the same?

I know petrol used to be used as a thinner in diesel many years ago before anti-waxing agents were put in diesel for the winter.

Thinking of trying a small percentage of unleaded in veg now the weather is getting colder, just wondering if anyone else doing same.

I was wondering about seal erosion. I know some materials that are compatible with diesel aren't compatible with petrol. Dunno if it's the same as white spirit...

People have used up to 20% RUG(Regular Unleaded Gasoline) without problem. IF you go higher, and you have heating of somekind, some have experienced vapor flash, where the gasoline will be heated too much and cause problems. Kerosene may be a better alternative to the RUG, unless the price of Kerosene is more than the RUG.

            Thinning SVO

Before I had my single tank conversion (Elsbett), I used SVO with approx 10% white spirit, then unleaded - initially 10%, later 20% as weather got colder (this was last Winter) - and wished I hadn't. The injector pump sprang a major leak, which cost about £300 labour to get the pump off and back on again. Had the timing belt and idler done at the same time, if I recall. I did the seals myself, which was an interesting task (scary), but it worked out fine and the pump is still going strong. I still don't know if it was the white spirit or petrol which caused or precipitated the problem; perhaps it was just 'time', or the cold?

Now running varying mixtures of SVO, biodiesel (of varying quality ) and derv, which is material for another thread.

Its the veg oil causing that leak not any of the other 2 liquids, veg shrinks the seals, i found white spirit helped reduce the leaks because of its ability to reduce the viscosity, oh and i wouldnt go back to that garage, as it should only cost £300 from a diesel specialist to remove replace pump, and to do the seals for you. Glad your pump is still ok though, Cheers
