Do you know if it has made a difference to your fuel consumption by any chance?

I've fitted a 3" mandrel bend system right through my Surf recently and it has made a BIG difference to power... plus the obvious improvement in the exhaust note. Don't suppose it's relevant to you guys, but as an indication I paid AUD$600 for my custom system (about £250 I think?)... took a full day to be made.

Its Done!
HI
Got back from Allisport this evening so have had lots of road to try out the modifications.
Just one word... fantastic! Its a brand new car now.
Accelleration is astonishing, more of a car than truck now if you see what I mean.
Sorry smurfx, but the front mounted intercooler really does the trick and I'm not feeling any turbo lag (been driving 200bhp turbo for 5 years)
This is a nice neat mod, no enormous scoops on the bonnet or body lifts. The intercooler lives directly behind the intake above the bumper. I know the surf is a pretty powerful vehicle as standard but to be honest its all a matter of relativity.
If you are stepping up from a lesser 4x4 then you will be more than happy with the performance. But if you are stepping down from a powerful car the Surfs motorway performance is really frustrating and you might want to consider this upgrade.
Couldnt resist going down to a nice straight bit of road where I did a 0 to 60 last week. Ok, timings arnt too accurate, my previous time was around 16 seconds on a 1/4 tank and no load. Today I'm down to 12 seconds and thats with a 3/4 tank and the back stacked high with gear (approx 150KG) Top speed has changed drastically as well.
(Will get some better timings once I've used up all that diesel and I'll re write this section of the post.)
Regarding earlier threads I am noticing no change in the water temparature although of course its winter here at the moment.
There were issues mentioned about braking upgrades etc but if you think about it you are still stopping from the same speeds with the same weight of truck so as long as you are not using that extra BHP with your eyes shut I see no difference.
If you are making use of that increased top speed then of course you are putting yourself at risk as you may then be outside the Surfs design tolerance not to mention the tyres.
I thouroghly recommend Allisport, great engineering with beautifuly welded mods to the porting of the inlet manifold. Service was good as well, they let me put 400 miles on their Landy Discovery getting to and from my work whilst they had the surf.
I spent 6 months looking for a blue over silver intercooled surf until I finally gave up and bought my SSR-G. Most of the dealers were quoting £500 for the factory intercooler option for a mere 15BHP gain. Allisport's mods have given me some 50 extra BHP to play with at a very good price.

Mike,
I would really apreciate some feedback on the fuel consumption figures, if you can do some?
Regards

Lag
Hi Mark
I spoke to allisport about possible increased lag quite early on and their view was as the Surf has a fast running turbo the pipework gets pressurised almost instantaniously.
The turbo boost seems to be kicking in exactly as before but of course the system is providing a lot more power now.
My main use for the upgrade was for motorway and open road driving where the turbo is already active but the drastic change in 0 to 60 time is still quite a surprise.
Best regards
Mike

Stats
Heres the figures so far;
0 to 60 (comparison) 11sec now (15 sec previous)
MPG seems unchanged between 26 and 28 MPG but I do have a bad case of lead foot so the engine is probobly more economical now.
The car is far more responsive at open road / motorway speeds, strong acceleration right up to 70mh.

Blimey,
if you are getting 26 to 28 mpg and with a lead foot...
I struggled to get 25.3mpg the other day... and that was keeping to 56mph, and under 2,500 revs... very hard work... all motorway... (almost two trips to Pompei on consecutive days...)...
I must have a problem with the diesel pump and/or injectors...

well i say i have a lead foot but I try to not have!!!! will only get about 320kms out of this tank... 1/2 on mway at 70-80 and the rest around town and shortish journeys.
might well get new injectorsTim

Injectors it is then...
might have found a trusted (race) mechanic to look at the pump timing also... more news on that to follow... could be a nice little earner for him... see if there is a chance to do a few of them at a time.
Is there any mileage ( ) in getting the injectors breathed on so that they deliver slightly more or better...?

PS. looking for that little extra umph... obviously exhaust (another job this year), remap the ECU... etc.

How much more power?

I cannot thank this man enough for his help in fitting the upgrade.

He can also upgrade your injectors to cope with the extra fuel being pushed through under heavy pulling (next item on my list).

Snag
Hi
I have a bit of an update on my engine mods.
After a fantastic start over the following few weeks the engine started playing up on Allisport's settings.
I seem to hit a fuelling problem if gently trying to accellerate at speed or under load without changing down. The car will falter and can only be acellerated by using kick down, I'm told it is over fuelling.
I reduced the boost pressure slightly and things were fine for another week and then the fault crept back on this lower setting.
What seems to be happening is that the ECU is drifting or perhaps analysing the changes made to allow the intercooler to work. There is a small electronics box in line with my ecu that is supposed to remap the fuel pump to compensate for the thicker air and my ecu almost seems to be learning to override it.... at least thats my theory.
Allisport have been discussing my problem with the manufacturer, and their answer was that the Gen3 has an upgraded auto transmission which is trying to compensate for the extra power? They claim the engine and their modification is fine.
The end result is that I have now dialled out all of my extra boost pressure and my fuel consumption is steadily rising. This is a very frustrating situation after having a taste of how well the truck ran just after the intercooler was fitted.
This modification seems to be fine for a Gen1 or Gen2 surf.... but please wait before using a similar system on a Gen3 until Allisport can find a solution as I can no longer recommend it.
If any Diesel tuners out there have a solution please let me know ASAP as I know there has been a lot of interest in this product.

intercooler
Well it's been a while since I posted anything!
I have had fitted a 3" straight thro' pipe fitted nice noise!
And I have just got myself an intercooler with fan off ebay. One question - do you have to remap the ecu to run the intercooler or do I just fit it?
Talking to various peeps some say run it other remap etc etc - HELP!
Any help most appreciated.
