  • Engine ticking problems

Hi all, I've recently had a loud ticking start on the engine hilux surf (3.0 TDI). It was fine until I had to tow my caravan up an incline and now its really loud all the time. Theres no real power lost and it still goes, nor is it overheating. sounded like could be a cylinder, injector or maybe jumped a tooth. So i change timing belt and tensioner and pulleys were all set up correct, took rocker cover off checked cams and shims which are all fine and tight, checked injectors by slackening off while it was running, they didn't make a difference, put new filter on and over the last 5 days 2 lots of fuel cleaner in filter, red x diesel in tank, engine flush and new oil change with additives as well but still there, tick tick tick. I noticed if i run it up to about 70mph 3500rpm when i take foot off the gas it goes as revs drop but come back when they hit 1000rmp. Anyone had this problem before? Any advice would be well aprieciated as its doing my head right in now. Have had the balls to go right in for cylinder or injectors as I'm an amateur mechanic :S

The fact that you mentioned that this started after you towed your van up hill would lead me to suspect that you have damaged a big end. The crank or bearing has become ovalated which explains why when you coast you can not hear the noise as your vehicles weight is now pushing the engine as opposed to the engine driving the car.
Hope I'm wrong but it sounds like you have a fairly big repair on your hands.

I've had another look at it and I don't think it's the big end as the ticking is there all the time it only goes quiet when I get it to about 80mph and coast. Also the ticking sound seems to be coming from the top (beneath the cams and shims) which leads me to think it could be piston or cylinder based problem (fingers crossed). Has anyone had this exact problem before though? I've decided to do it myself rather than pay for some gum dryers summer holiday.lol

Yes on a Mondeo engine after I towed my caravan up a long hill. The day before the bottom end finally went a bloke was telling me that it could'nt be he big ends as the noise was too high in the engine.
As I said hope I"m wrong but I think you need to get the sump off and start pulling and pushing!!

I'm really gutted about this now. Been told it could be big end, piston etc etc. I've only had it 3mibths and spent all my money on it and now can't afford to get it fixed or even a new car. F#%k!

you wouldn't happen to know his name on here would you fella? that would be a saviour.

Im taking it to the unit tomorrow and taking the sump off to have a pull about and have a look. im determined (well forced because of finances) to sort this myself. but could use a little help. (lol as I cry).

His name is Vince ( Bushwhacker). Check the modifications section,he does a little bit of messing around with lexus engines!!!

The job you are faced with is labour intensive but isn't that difficult. At best you will need a new set of big end bearings at worst bearings and a crank grind.
Maybe vince has got a good bottom end you could buy off him!!

There's as much help on this forum as you will need to do anything on your truck!

                Best of luck

Is the noise there at idle?

Does the noise start when the turbo is boosting? (Approx 2600 rpm >)

Is the noise there if you rev the engine above 2500 rpm whilst parked?

Hi Vince, thanks for getting back to me fella. its there from the start and all the time. the only time it ever went was when Ive took it to about 75mph and then let it roll where by it goes till the engine drops back down to about 3500rpm then it comes back to what it usually is. have been told numerous things it could be but no one seems to have dealt with hilux's that much that they'd know. was going to drain it tomorrow and take sump off to have a look, but really I'm looking blind as haven't dealt with these before. have you got spares for my model? I'm in Ynysddu, near Blackwood.

Im used to dealing with modded Suzuki vitara's, but have now come to the big boy club and this prbloem kicks me in the ass!lol

You sure it's not something like the harmonic balancer pulley?
well, that was a bad idea!

it maybe, but I'm not familiar with in depth working on engines to be honest. I can do most things but mainly what I've been show and done with other over the years on other cars. I've gone as far as my knowledge can take me really. but I'm delving into the unknown with this problem. but by god I determined to do this myself and learn something new. :S once I do something once I got it for life usually, hence to cry for help....and the lack of funds.lol

                              Hard to diagnose over interweb.
I would be easier for me to have a listen and a poke about, it won't cost you anything.
I'm in Abercarn by the way.
                              I'll e-mail my address.
                              Cheers.
