I have always had this problem too. Changed my glowplugs to no avail. I was mulling it in my head that it was a leaky injector or something like that. Not knowing that much about diesels (i'm a motorbike mechanic) i was wondering if a worn out injector would slowly release any residual pressure overnight and give it too much fuel to start with? Do diesel injectors work like petrol injectors (which pulse) and close when not in use?, or are they just an open port that diesel gets squirted out of once the pump decides to release the fuel to that particular cylinder? My surf starts okish if i leave the glow plugs on untill the beeper in the cab sounds, but i'd like it to start nicely once the glow plug light goes out (as it should).

yes filters are all new, treated fuel 2 times in the last month, i am thinking it is something todo with the tps or the throttle butterfly, i do have a code 11 that keeps on popping up, i have ordered new injector nozzles when they arrive i will be having them rebuilt by a specialist, another thing i was thinking about is maybe the vsv for the butterfly is not functioning as it should, possibly choking the engine on startup, will confirm this in the morning when engine is cold, what position should the butterfly be in on cold start? I am assuming it should be open as closed would stall the engine, so maybe it is not open enough, maybe the vsv is messed when cold.Last edited by kit05; 26 August 2010, 04:20.

Stormforce: Yes i understand that, thats what i'm already doing as BUSHWHACKER has already pointed out. My point being that i shouldn't have to (cant imagine that the poor old Toyota sales man had to say to the customer as he handed over the brand new vehicle "yes sir, just turn on the ignition, ignore the glowplug light on the dash which appears to have no bearing on the starting procedure whatsoever, count to ten, wait till you hear the relay click and/or beep sound, say a few hail mary's and she might just fire up!"), as with every other roadgoing diesel car in the world, i should be able to turn the key and wait for the glowplug light to go out and off we go. Yes it works but it aint right. And from the sounds of it kit05 has it much worse than me (although mine's heading in his direction) and we're not the only poeple that have this complaint. I've got a new fuel filter on the car (changed it two weeks ago) and i regularly use diesel fuel treatment (redex), a new air filter, and new glow plugs, i change the oil almost every other month (excessive i know) and has made no difference at all. Me being a motorcycle mechanic and not a diesel mechanic, i'm at the end of my ability. Stuck. Kaput. Does anyone no how much and from where (apart from toyota) i could source new injectors? If the mountain wont come to mohammed..... smash the place up!!

The next thing I would be checking is the fuel primer on top of the filter. The diaphragm can perish and allow air into the fuel causing drain back to the tank.
Is there vacuum present in the tank preventing consistant fuel flow when cranking.
Is there a loud hiss when the filler cap is removed? If so then the tank breather could be blocked.
Are you positive all the glowplugs are working?
Crankcase vent on the valve cover clear?
Are the batteries fully charged i.e. can crank the engine fast enough?
And yes, the injectors on these trucks are just nozzles, not electrical, but they can start to gum up at around 100,000 kms. and dribble rather than atomise the fuel.

yes batteries are really good fires up instantly, i do noticed there is a sound when i undo the gas cap to refuel, not sure what this means, everything is operating as it should change oil evry 3000 kms and fuel filter has been changed every 5000 kms, my hand primer seems to be holding pressure, i do notice that the plunger is hard but when i check it periodicly it will let me pump it 3 or 4 times till the pump goes really hard and wont let you pump it anymore,it makes no difference if i pump it before a cold start, should it be really hard all the time? it stills has pressure, i noticed today when i started to leave work i just floored the gas pedal while strting and it would just bog till the rpms cuaght up? isnt there a 1wa valve you can put in the fuel line to stop the fuel from draining back to the tank?Last edited by kit05; 27 August 2010, 01:05.

Hmm, i have noticed a hiss from the tank before when filling up, couldn't say if it was pressure or vacuum though. I'll have to try and find the fuel tank breather now and have a look (good shout BUSHWHACKER). If the injectors are just nozzles does that mean they are easy to clean? How come i've heard about people getting they're injectors rebuilt by someone called Diesel Bob?If the mountain wont come to mohammed..... smash the place up!!

Apparently there should be no hissing noise, blocked breather leading to fuel starvation, I think some here simply drilled a small hole in the filler cap but theres an inspection panel beneath the rear seat, I'm not sure but the breather might be there. H
