Even so far as if you try and pull away gently on full lock it just won't move unless you rev it a bit to get a tyre spinning.
I think the 4wd isn't working full stop, so it won't go into 4wd, which is why the light on the dash doesn't come on.
The Auto box is a seperate issue, if its not driving properly you wil still get $hity MPG, as it could be slipping all the time. First thing to do is get some new ATF in there, maybe 2 or 3 oil changes in a few weeks to get all the old junk out.
If its an electronic fault, the O/D light should be flashing. Favorite is new oil, otherwise its could have ruined clutch band or the torque convertor could be knackered either of which is a autobox specialist job. (unless you just changing the convertor, thats just a garbox out, fit new one, gearbox in job..)When the going gets tough...The Surf gets going!!!

I think the oil should be within 3-5mm of the bottom of the inspection hole. Best doing a search though, cos i'm only writing what i think i can remember.=========

Spoke to someone from Toyota and they said that the torque converter was fine because it engages and disengages the front drive shaft, but he wasn't sure what was actually causing the problem. I feel I'm getting closer to the fault but not close enough.
Anyone got any ideas???
It's a front diff problem then.
Don't ask any more questions at that Toyota dealer you spoke to, as the torque converter has nothing to do with engaging the front driveshaft, the transfer case does that job.

Bwahahaha! Tools! the Torque converter has nothing to do with 4wd.
