whooooo im sorted well more than i was i get the 4wd light on the dash now . need to wait till the morning to jack the car up and try and turn the wheels. It does judder on full lock in 4wd so i think i have the drive working now ?
cheers guys for all the help i thought i had just bought a lemon
If it is 4wd, MPG will suffer, but to honest, you'd know if it was in 4wd, the tyres would scuff and skip like crazy when turning on full lock (normally the inside back one), especially if its dry. Even so far as if you try and pull away gently on full lock it just won't move unless you rev it a bit to get a tyre spinning.
I think the 4wd isn't working full stop, so it won't go into 4wd, which is why the light on the dash doesn't come on.
The Auto box is a seperate issue, if its not driving properly you wil still get $hity MPG, as it could be slipping all the time. First thing to do is get some new ATF in there, maybe 2 or 3 oil changes in a few weeks to get all the old junk out.
If its an electronic fault, the O/D light should be flashing. Favorite is new oil, otherwise its could have ruined clutch band or the torque convertor could be knackered either of which is a autobox specialist job. (unless you just changing the convertor, thats just a garbox out, fit new one, gearbox in job..)
How do I tell if its either the torque converter or the clutch band? Is it an expensive job whichever one I have to do? Somebody mentioned to the missus today about checking the oil in the front and rear diff (I think it was that anyway), how do I check the oil here?

There's an inspection plug on the rear of the rear diff need a large socket/spanner to undo i think, i'm yet to venture too near the front diff though to see where it is on there. Need to check your axle code to find out what sort of oil you gotta put in, depends or whether it's LSD or not. If i remember right axle codes ending 3 or 5 are LSD.
I think the oil should be within 3-5mm of the bottom of the inspection hole. Best doing a search though, cos i'm only writing what i think i can remember.

Jacked it up today got all 4 wheels off the ground, put it in 4WD and only the rear wheels turned, checked underneath at the drive shafts, both were turning, put it in 2WD and only the rear drive shaft spun, put it back in 4WD and I could spin the wheels easily with my hands and the front drive shaft was spinning. Spoke to someone from Toyota and they said that the torque converter was fine because it engages and disengages the front drive shaft, but he wasn't sure what was actually causing the problem. I feel I'm getting closer to the fault but not close enough.
Anyone got any ideas???

It's a front diff problem then.
Don't ask any more questions at that Toyota dealer you spoke to, as the torque converter has nothing to do with engaging the front driveshaft, the transfer case does that job.

Bwahahaha! Tools! the Torque converter has nothing to do with 4wd.

With it 4wd, and in Park (or holding the front prop), when you spin one wheel does the to other one spin at the same time? If not its more likely to be the ADD actuator on the axle.

Hi M8 have you checked all the vacume pipes ? the problem sounds the same as mine and it was a pipe off mine working fine now

I had it in 4WD and in drive with the handbrake off, to be honest I didn't take any notice if the other wheel was turning or not, I don't think it was. Is the ADD actuator an expensive job or is it an easy fix, hopefully going to check the diff oil levels tomorrow. Do you think that could be a possibility? Maybe the oil needs changing? Whats the easiest way to check the ADD system? Do I need to take off the sump guard? (god I wish there was someone down here that could help me )
