Just tried driving mine in 4WD (in a straight line at about 20mph), but I'm not sure if it actually engaged. Didn't seem to be much difference between normal and 4WD. I'm wondering now whether it is permanently stuck in 4WD. I have no dash light telling me if its on or off, all I hear when I press the button is a relay clicking. If it is permanently stuck in 4WD, would this have much effect on the fuel consumption? At the moment i'm putting £30 in every 3 or 4 days and only getting about 100 miles from it. How can I tell if it is stuck in 4WD? I'm getting abit p@@@ed off with the thing now cos when I try pulling away from somewhere (after its been driven for a little while) it takes ages for the wheels to engage......HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it was stuck in 4wd, you'd know! I accidentally knocked mine into 4wd one in a car park whilst reversing out, and I noticed in seconds because the steering felt like the power assistance had gone.
The light should come on once the system is fully engaged. If it's not coming one, then either:
1. The bulb has blown
2. The system isn't engaging. Most likely a vacuum pipe isn't vacuuming properly.Paul </Slugsie>

I think you could test by doing this
on your drive or flat straight surface, put in 4wd, then drive it forward or back a metre or 2, then jack up front end, if you cant turn either of the front wheels by hand its in 4wd (as the transmission will all be "connected" up i.e. front and back axles coupled by prop-shafts and transfer box.)
if you can spin the front wheels by hand, 4wd isnt engaged properly or at allLandcruiser Colorado

If it is 4wd, MPG will suffer, but to honest, you'd know if it was in 4wd, the tyres would scuff and skip like crazy when turning on full lock (normally the inside back one), especially if its dry. Even so far as if you try and pull away gently on full lock it just won't move unless you rev it a bit to get a tyre spinning.
I think the 4wd isn't working full stop, so it won't go into 4wd, which is why the light on the dash doesn't come on.
The Auto box is a seperate issue, if its not driving properly you wil still get $hity MPG, as it could be slipping all the time. First thing to do is get some new ATF in there, maybe 2 or 3 oil changes in a few weeks to get all the old junk out.
If its an electronic fault, the O/D light should be flashing. Favorite is new oil, otherwise its could have ruined clutch band or the torque convertor could be knackered either of which is a autobox specialist job. (unless you just changing the convertor, thats just a garbox out, fit new one, gearbox in job..)4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

I know this aint the same problem but might be related. I cant get it in 4wd? Jacked the front up and I can turn the wheels. The light on the dash dont come on either. I have tried every combination of the leaver and switch but still the same. I read through loads of posts about the vacume and I have found a hose with nowt attached. I have marked it and attached the pic. Anyone know where it goes and could this solve my problem ?
I can hear the switch clicking and i here the relay clicking as well ?
thanks in advanceLean Green Veggie Machine

Dunno if this could be the reason for any of your problems, but i found it on mine yesterday. My 4wd dash light doesn't work but i know that 4wd does engage and work. But i found a disconnected electrical connector on the passenger side of the engine, about 1/2 way down in the engine bay near the back. (around the front of the torsion bar).
I found it looking from under the truck, the top connector was held by a plug type thing to the inner wing, the bottom was hanging from it's wire which i followed back to the front of the front diff. The connector was a white plastic one (nothing new there then).
Anyway i'm sure the 4wd system was working ok other than the light, I haven't managed to connect it back up yet and see what happens as it was full up with mud and starting to get dark when i found it so it will have to wait til i got more light and time to clean out the connectors and join them back up.=========
