that maplin one (A59FL) looks like a lucas type socket... (about half the size of a regular cigar lighter type)

Nope, they're full sized sockets. I bought 2 at the weekend, one for the car, and one for another project I'm working on. I may end up buying a couple more too to fit around the car.

Thinking about a split charger to charge a small lead/acid battery that I can mount in the boot cubby hole and run a socket off. Anyone recommend a cheap split charger?

Staright forward 180 amp relay will do the job.

Connected with the ignition is on, disconnected when it isn't...

You could get more clever, and find a circuit that fires up when the engine is actually running to fire the relay...

Clifford used to do a monitor circuit for the remote start kits that would do that.

My secondary towbar socket electrics works on the principle that once the voltage gets above 14v on the feed wire from the main battery it clicks a relay in to let power through for charging a caravan battery or work the fridge. So maybe have a word with a towbar fitting company

being useless at soldering is there anything i can use to connect an inline fuse to my + terminal on battery and then onto my cable, i'm putting extra cigarette sockets in the boot, one on each side of rear pillar, is it ok to use one battery for one side and other battery for the other ?, i've been warned Scotch Lok connectors are pretty useless

finally got round to doing this today - or at least feeding the wire through from bay to rear under carpet etc but i couldn't get the wire through the gromet on the passenger side (as adised) so pushed it through a gromet on the drivers side, does it matter if i wire it all up to drivers side battery rather than passenger side (as advised)?

I don't think so. Both batteries are wired together in parallel with fairly hefty wires, so it's unlikely to cause one battery to be used in preference to another.
