if delete the ADD & get rid of the 4WD electrics would that leave just high 2 and low 4 by the mechanical H2-L4 shift lever of the TC? what speed do you reach in L4 in 1st because i only used L4 for off roading with the 2.4D i only used L4 -2 for uphill and L4 -1 for down hill as couldnt really go any faster so with the V8 i asume you only need L4 - 1 for up and down hill as i dont think i could go up a hill about 40mph in 2nd??
Hiroler is keeping the Surf's clocks.
The ADD system is exactly the same as it was before, (shift on the fly, Hi, Low range via the stick, green light on dash) except there's now no vacuum to worry about. (which is nearly always the cause of 4wd select problems on Surfs)
Because I used the Lexus clocks, I took the green 4wd indicator from the Surf's clocks and glued it into the Lexus clocks into one of the unused indicators e.g. the ABS light.
All you do is keep the ADD wiring which is incorporated into the two multiplugs (one grey and the other is white) which are next to the Surf's ECU.

Unplug them and pull them through into the engine bay. Strip off all the black wrapping.
Unplug the wiper's plug and the ADD wiring plug, label them and take this loom over to the transmission/transfer case.

    ADD wiring/plug...

Then you need plug everything in thats connected on and around the transfer case. This wiring is also incorporated into those two plugs explained above so plug it all in.
Now all you to do is chop off all the other wires that are not needed back to the two plugs. (keep the white/black stripe wire, this is an earth wire for the ADD.
Then tidy it all up and cover the wires with protective sleeving/insulating tape.

Another wire I kept is the one for the temp sensor on the atf pipe so that the orange AT/P light will still work on the dash when the atf gets hot or when the transfer lever is in neutral.

The Lexus ATF pipe needed a slight massaging to get it to screw into the adapter, but slowly and carefully it can be done. The brackets holding the pipes neede removing first, then I just swapped them around to re-secure the pipes to the engine.

Danny, just a 'heads up' before you re-fit the fuel tank, check/clean/protect the brake pipes behind it.
Fortunately Hiroler's were in very good condition, nice and smooth (once I had cleaned the mud off, now it's all Hammerite-ed under there) but they have been known to corrode badly enough to burst under hard braking. They're almost impossible to see at MOT time too.

thanks for that vince! will check it out

shame about the fuel filter i did see the pic you posted. be good so see if your R&D is sucuessful in this area!

yeah mines going OK just need to spend more time on it just want it finished now! got the engine in on the mounts and the mount on the TC.so its in now!
the engine is about 5mm out of level if you stand infront of the car looking at it shouldnt be a problem???. still got to do the 4WD ADD delete and the fuel tank then start to wire up

may need to pick your brain on a few elements regarding the wiring though!

vince just a quick one on the wiring are you splicing cables IG1 and IG2 just passed the igintion key and making a loom and fueses for the ignition, gauge, engine, etc or are you taking the wires out the back of JB1 on the surf then to the lexus engine?

                    Handbrake

Hi Danny have you sorted out your handbrake problem, if not have you thought of trying to use the 3rd gen system there are a few in the scrap yards being broken now. Plus i think someone on the forum is brakeing a 3rd Gen.

                    Regards Hilux-Bob

                        • cheers bob thanks for the heads up, at the mo i have terry on speed dial! my fixer! needed a few bits off him! thanks for the A bar will get in touch when finished will drive it down and pick it up! so sometime next year then! just sorting out the loom. thinking of splicing the loom just after the ignition as its the same as the lexus pre ignition just need to sort out the alternator regulator leads charge warning light and engine fuse before the ignition. the wiring diagrams seem to marry with the leads in the loom which is a big help!
