  • KZN185 Cut out & won't restart

    Morning all,

I just made a short trip across the campo, all fine and motor started as normal. Reached my destination (10 min drive away) turned motor off and had a coffee. Went to restart after about 15 mins and after about 3-5 seconds of the eninge running it just cut out. The fuel/water separator light has come on. I tried again and it almost fired up, but pretty much died straight away. It's turning over fine but just won't start. I had actually replaced the fuel filter about 6 weeks ago so I am hoping that is fine, also when I manually pump the priming plunger it does get harder.
I checked the oil and it was pretty damn low, far lower than I would ever have my oil, but in fairness I'd not checked it for about a year. So I've just put about 4L of fresh oil in but still it won't start and the warning light is still present.
I've also checked all of the fuses I could find and they all seem to be good, as does solid connections on both batteries.

Help please, sods law but I'm due to finally put the motor through its last inspection to get it onto Spanish plates next week and with snow coming in I need my truck running.

Mine done similar about 18 months ago. It would just crank and not fire at all. I checked all the obvious things and then started blamming the immob and was making plans in my head on how to do a roadside strip out! But it turned out to be the ECD fuse in the engine bay box of fuses. Worth a check for you at least.

That was one of the 15amp fuses I checked earlier, still no joy

I also took the new fuel filter off again and it was loaded with nice clean fuel, re-primed but nothing!

Mechanic has checked that and all seems good. He's tried to connect his diagnostic dooh dah onto it but of course, the plugs are very different. He has a 16 pin Scart plug type of cable and the Surf has something very different. Can you tell me if this type of adapter will do the job?

Or, is it this one? Unfortunately the car is not very local to me otherwise I'd pop out and check it myself, but I don't want to waste time so I can get an adapter ordered asap.

even if you get a connector the nearest you would get fault codes for is a landcrewser that not spelt correct is it never mind
why don't you take the codes off the overdrive light
lots of threads on here how to do it at leats you will know that its for your truck
and by the way your fitter don't sound that good

What do you mean by codes from the overdrive light?

My mechanic obviosly didn't try to plug his device in, I meant that he looked at it and saw that it was completely different and that he didn't have that type of connector. In any case there's a Bosch injector specialist close by who apparently does have the right attachment, I just have to pay for a tow truck to take it down to him and then bring it back again!

The mechanic has never let me down on anything I've taken to him and he charges next to nothing. I got a starter motor swapped over and he charged me €10. Much better than breaking my back to do it!

if you look in the top of the plug the pins are numbered you have to cross two them turn on ignition and count the flashes of overdrive light on dash
it will be summit like 3 flashes little break 2 flashes and this would repeat
this would mean code 32 or you may get say 9 flashes and a longer break that would mean code 9
i think the codes go from 1 to 20 summit i think
however i don't know how off hand you will have to look it up on the forum you can also find a list of the codes and what they mean hope this helps

Well I've been down to the car to try out the OBD thingy and nothing, not a bean.

I connected the paperclip into TE1 & E1, but there was no flashing lights on the dash, the water/fuel filter light remained on though.

I then tried the multimeter across VF1 & E1 but zero voltage was registered. I tried looking for the secondary diagnostic port inside the car but couldn't locate it anywhere.

                              Any other thoughts or suggestions?
