Only other thing I can think of, besides low compression on cylinders.

    Hope you get it sorted.
Do you mean the Spill Control Valve?

Ok the state of play so far is that with 12v introduced to the SPV plug the engine starts and the ECU has an alleged clean bill of health.

Trying to follow the blue cable at the SPV back to the ECU vicinity it seems it takes a detour over to the drivers side, unlike the red/black from the SPV which goes straight in to the ECU. Does anyone know if the blue cable goes to a relay over the drivers side or any other info/suggestions that may help?

And just a reminder, the dash warning light 'water in fuel' is on and there is a new filter fitted.

Still no further along in tracing the problem. Where's the replies from the sulky crew? You're not all still looking for your toys you threw out are you?

If you do not live too far away, I could bring my 3rd Gen Surf to you to compare wiring, ECU etc. Will.

Tio that is an awesome gesture, muchas gracias. I see you're in Malaga province, I am in Granada province so not a million KM's away, just a blast down the A92!
I have had the motor moved to another mechanic who is doing the matriculation for me as he has an 'auto electrician' colleague allegedly. But if nothing is forward moving in the next couple of weeks I may well come back to you, expenses paid for you of course
Is yours still on UK plates or have you transferred?

OK, I will wait until your mechanic has had a look. I re-registered the car when I first moved to Spain in 2007. They changed the rules since then, but I have seen other Surf's recently which have been changed over. My telephone number is 952 554 811, if you decide you need to compare cars. Will.

You think so Bryan? Even after the 'ECU Dr' said it was 100% ok? Have they been known to be wrong then?

Also, as a side question; doesn't an ECU from another vehicle require some sort of programming or can any 3rd Gen with the Denso unit just be interchanged?

Had to tow my friend home the other day who had broken down in his gen 2. The engine cut out and wouldn't re start. It started the next morning and then died quickly. (Sounds similar to you scenario) and there was no warning lights or anything to suggest an eletrical thing had failed. But the spill control valve had failed in the open position so the injectors werent getting any fuel. This sounds like it could be your problem. Id agree the ecu isnt the problem if checked by a qualified professional. But the spill valve wont throw an error light up. Best to get another and try it. They are about £120 brand new

This morning the second garage took my motor to a 3rd garage!!! On the plus side though, the owner and his son both own 4Runners! So maybe some joy around the corner there. A week of fiestas etc so nothing is going to materialise this week but at least things are starting to move in the right direction.

Has the spill valve been tested?
