Airbox not sealing

Has anyone had this problem before?

It sounded like I had a blow from the front section of the exhaust but on closer inspection it seems the airbox lid isn't sealing. the clips aren't under any strain. I've checked that its seated properly.

Any ideas to a solution? I tried to bend the clips to make it pull down more but to no avail, other options I've had are putting something between it and the bonnet so the bonnet forces it shut or figuring out some way on making a brace to so I can screw it down tight.

Before I head off in that direction, has anyone had this and solved it in a simpler way?!

Filter looks fine, and the case looks like its seated fine. Every other air box I've opened, the clips have nearly took my fingers off. These ones are so loose in comparison.

Im pretty sure even without a filter in the box it should seal properly?

You could try lining the inside of the airbox lid with draught excluder, the type that you might stick to a door or door frame. Where the edge of the airbox sits inside the lid, stick it there. Should make a good seal. You could also try self amalgamating tape around the edge of the air box, that will work too.

I did think about taking the lid off and putting a bead of sealant around the inside of the lid, then the next day when its dry hopefully the lid should be more snug?

A lot cheaper than a blowing exhaust, I can see why people say don't put an induction kit on, its makes a crap noise.

Sounds like you have the wrong filter in there, it should be up against the lid as you clip it down otherwise a snorkel would be pretty useless if you ever fit one.

Ok, for the price of a filter I might get a new one from toyota and see if it's any different. Are there normally problems getting the right part as it's an import? Or can they just check by reg the same?

Got mine from Roughtrax and it fits fine. Probably half the cost of a Toyota one.

Had the same problem with mine except it had clips missing. Fixed with a few strategically drilled holes in the ribs on the outside of the housing and a handfull of tie-wraps. Not pretty but effective. Check you've got the right filter first. As a long term fix find one off a scrapper. Prado / colorado filter housing is identical.

I got a new filter, made no difference.

Thinking about it, the filter wouldn't have made a difference being shorter would have made the seal better, a taller filter would have made the air box less likely to seal.

Either way, I have solved the problem, you might say temporarily but I don't see why it cant be permanent! Noise stopped. :-)

Got any photos of the inside of the air box and lid?
