  • ATF fluid change !!!!!!

Looks like changing the ATF fluid its a mucky brown in colour,
been sifting through some of the threads on here but i'm a bit confused,
I've read that to do a complete change its the 2 bucket method .
but the 3 threads that I've read say that it didn't pull the new oil through
and that it takes about 35 litres for a full change .
I printed off Technical data sheet off ROUGH TRAX for Kzn 185 and
on there it tells you 12 litres from dry . 2.2 litres drain & refill !!!!!!!

data sheet attached from rough trax

When I drained mine I got just shy of the 5 litre container in to refill it.
If you drain the ATF at oil change, eventually most of the oil will get changed.
Then do a drain and refill every year.
I think someone else on here posted this method as well.

if the atf was ok I could just do a drain and fill .
but it smells burnt and is brown , so I m thinking it
must all have to come out to put new in .

Could drain and refill it every 2 weeks. 20 litres of oil, and slowly take the old out with the new. not much dearer than the 2 bucket method and 35 litres of oil.

Im with the rest. If you are starting with the correct ATF level you will get approx 4.5l out of the KZN 185 just by draining. Do that today. Do it again in a week or so and then again. till it looks decent. A couple or 3 times should do it using 15-20l of ATF at most.
I do what Sparkie 67 does and drop out the pan contents and refill at every engine oil change. Mine always looks nice a reddish.

Tip, I assume you will remove the bash plate to do the draining. Leave it off until youre 3rd or whatever drain and fill as bash plate removal refit is the hardest ( most labour intensive) part of an easy job

              Thanks for your replies,
will do the drain and fill 2 or3 times and see how it looks .
one thing thou my bash plate doesn't go that far back
I can get to the atf drain sump easy will be taking it off
and cleaning filter as other threads recommend.

Then half of your bash plate is missing, Mine has two sections, big bit at the front with a smaller section that goes back over the ATF sump.
Im sure youre reading has shown you that the ATF sump has a metal strainer rather than a filter. and sump pan will need careful sealing on refitting.

                    Two sections? errr...

I only have the one front bit as well, it doesn't look like anything's missing though.

Nope doesn't ring any bells, but thanks for posting that. I've bookmarked it now so I can quickly re-post it for any other patronising smartarses.
