Nudge the crank round a little bit more - the pump pulley is a little early too.

Get the belt on, set the tensioner and rotate the engine a few times to make sure the marks still all line up.

Make sure you remove the tensioner and press it back in using a vice. Use a small allen key through the hole to hold it in.

Then fit the belt and push the tensioner pulley against it before re-installing tensioner.

Yes the pump mark is a tiny bit early but not as much as the crank, do you think it will be OK? should get the pump aligned 100% or the crank 100% (based on pictures above).

        Thanks

The pump pulley moves at half the speed of the crankshaft so they will align perfect if you turn the crank a little bit.

Thanks mate, I dont have an issue with the tentioner, just the bl**dy marks which I upset whilst belt was off.

                  Thanks

Yes - there's a woodruff key on the shaft which means the timing mark has to be correct.

Also no.1 cylinder will be at tdc with both valves shut (like in your pic)

Only done it once myself, but if he's been moving around all the pulleys without a cambelt he might be 360° out on the crank?

How can that be checked - I know there are mrks on the pump gears.

You know Toyota put handy plugs on all the VSV wiring so you can unplug them rather than yanking the wires out!!

The cam and pump marks are the important ones, the crank mark isn't important, but you can double check its in the right place. As others said the if you line the crank a little till it lines up the pump mark will still be in the right place.

Oh I DO know Toyotas handy plugs and how to use them - you have to see them before trying to unplug - or yanking out !
The inlet manifold was sitting under the bulkhead - yes UNDER the bulkhead as this was a GRANVIA and not a Surf!

In any case it's all done and dusted, running as sweet as ever.

I just had to turn the crank and cam in turn to clear valves until all 3 marks were lined up (THANKS TO ADVICE AND TIPS FROM WISHBONE AND NIFTYNEV)

By the way, on Granvias - there is a little cubby hole in the bulkhead which allows access to the rear of the engine, it's directly behind the centre glove box in the dash (half the dash needs to come out to access it - quite easy tho')
