well i think i have found out what the rattle is around the turbo.
where the pipe comes out the back or the down pipe for the exhaust i'm not sure as i only had a quick look underneath the surf but there is a bracket under a heat plate and that is all loose and flapping around so i will get that tightened up and see if that is the cure so will let you know later.

Let us know - mines got a rasping whistle sound at around 2150 rpm. People have said on the forum this could be a leak at the turbo, inlet manifold or the turbo bearings going. I'd like a leak! No really I'd like a leak..............
Also I have just done:
head replacement - this doesn't rattle!
no gas in air con system
superglued the turbo pressure sensor plastic pipe as it was snapped.
Slight leak at 2 injectors - getting gaskets

well i have tightened up the bracket that was loose and i have still got the rattle so i think it must be the turbo now that is making the noise.I am going to carry on running it until it packs in and then get another

I'd better fix my injector leaks, air con gasssing, and check all intake / exhaust leaks. I'm sure its the turbo making the noise. One guy put silicone around the intake to head faces and it cured the same sort of noise I have. I have already lightlt siliconed these faces on head replacement so?

A rattle suggests blades from worn bearings? I don't know but I hope it lasts a long time.

Well i have just had 2 quotes for 2nd hand turbo's.The 1st is £193 delivered from Nippon and the 2nd is £250 inc from a surf with 60 something thousand km's on it so i am just waiting now for a few more quotes and take it from there.

How easy/hard is it to change the turbo

I have nearly got the old turbo out and only the oil feed banjo bolt to take out now and then in with the new second hand turbo.If i had realised it would be such a pig to do i would of sent it to the garage to be done,but never mind at least i can say i bodged it myself

Have you got the old turbo off yet? I'm curious as to know what happens when you spin the impeller as I can' believe it could suddenly 'go' like yours did unless the bearing has broken up, or the exhaust turbine blades have come loose..

just 1 bolt left to take off and out it comes
