      Hi Jim
This all started with a posting from Australia. Les said that a lot of the Oz surfers had changed to low ash oils cos they recond that UK and American spec oils could damage Jap engines. I checked for info on the net. and found that the problem was mostly with Landcruisers with the 1HD-T engine, experts recon big end failure was down to wrong spec oil attacking bearings
If it affects the Surf I dont know. I just think I'll use a Jap spec oil, like Vanellus Global or Castrol J.Mex, just to be on the safe side.

was just looking at the amsoil link and realized where i had heard the name before, when i was but a novice grease monkey i was on placement in a garage that done a lot of race engines and that was what we used in them. its not cheap stuff but the guy i was working for swore by it and since we used to work on any thing from little boy racers with ford escorts to top of the range lambos and the like i would say it is good stuff

Hi folks, I am wondering here what oil is used by all the other owners of Jap cars/vans/4x4 on the road in Britain today. Is there such a thing as a Jap car with a UK spec engine?
If not I can't help feel this is a case of 'Surfitis' - a condition of dwelling on the tiniest detail that may prolong the life of a 12 year old, imported oil burner.(I suffered this for a year, now I don't care if the thing spontaneously combusts, as long as it still moves)
Surely if Jap engines really can't cope with UK oil then the motoring public would know by now. Toyota/Subaru/L200/Shogun etc

I am a bit fed up with feeling that evertime I log on to the forum there is another issue with the surf- if it really is as soft a car as we make out-sell it and sell it now.

I am about to load my motor with evil, stinky Castrol GTD from halfords. Seems easy enough.

No offence to any of you who are debating the point, but stop with the negative vibes man cos its gonna bring back my surfitis.

          cheers
          Ronnie

Could be right there mate! I only bought my new stereo to keep my eyes off the temp gauge!
Thats the only thing here small problems can be talked about so much that you start to worry if yours have the same fault, but then this is true of all forums! If you didnt read it you wouldnt know or worry about it you would just fix it when it goes wrong.

Surfitis is good too though! People who have it probably maintain thier Surfs better but you have to consider being paraniod or having fun!

for the time being I'll have a bit of both thanks

Just chill out guys, or leave the old lady in the garage.STOP WORRYING

at this rate you'll all be running around looking for the next then the next then the next possible problem or just drive the dam thing & look after her to the best of your ability.

or you could "I just sit here & looks out to sea or if i'm really rushed then i just sits here & continues to look out to sea" like me & drive the old lady with a smile !!!!!!!!!!

I think I've got Surfitis, I've got all the symtoms, sweating watching the temp guage in traffic, Listening for a change in the engine note,if isee a thread recomending some new gunk I shoot out and buy it and stick it in the tank I spend £3 a gallon on diesel and £5 in addatives.
I pat it every time I walk past it, I even talk to it.....Gee I,m a sick puppy
                Must get some therapy

I know exactly where your coming from!

I used to believe that the surf ran better when it was cleaned- good grief!

Try ragging it a bit- through some mud, and down the M-way, get some return from it, it does make you feel better, also brings out any problems to the surface. A bit like popping a zit!

On a more serious note, it has occured to me you really can throw A LOT of money at these cars, and the resale value of surfs are dropping like lead balloons, we all have to be careful not to get caught in the negative equity trap!

Surf on........but ya reeealy got to watch those dials.

I was interested to read in a posting that the Jap engines are designed to run on low ash oils. Les ( MTpockets} in Australia recomends Castrol J Max.
Is this on sale in UK, or is there any oil of same spec.
Grateful for any info on benefits ect. Never heard of low ash oil.

                    Cheers Ron
Sorry to bring up such an old thread but Castrol J Max is a high ash not low ash oil. Jap diesels require high ash oil.

i was told that its something to do with the design of the piston rings and standard of steel used in the bores. the ash provides a layer between the ring and bore helping it seal and reducing wear.
