Managed to get all the timing marks lined up, tightened all the bolts and didn't seem any different, left it to reset the ECU. Last night and tried to start it again tonight.

It sounds like it's only firing on two cylinders though, give it some gas and the idle will improve, seems to tick over a little as well. The engine still shakes though and a small amount of grey smoke when revved, any ideas?

Did you ever do a compression test, I can't remember?

Well, it seems as though I've fixed it

Reset the timing, adjusted the timing pump and increased the idle speed slightly, took it out for a drive and all seems well so far.

After some bad news when I got in from work (didn't use the Surf) I thought I'd take it out for a run, started it and the engine was shaking ( rocking from side to side a fair bit), it settles down when you increase the revs but still shakes when the revs go back to normal. Didn't take it out after all. Am I right in thinking it could be an injector problem, possibly damaged or blocked, meaning that the engine is just firing on three cylinders?

still unable to do a compression test, but can only think that it's either compression or injectors

Quick way to eliminate which pot is causing you issue is to go through and crack off each injector in turn and see if the "misfire" moves cylinders,
ie if it doesn't make a difference on pot three but makes it worse when tried on the others then it is probably pot three. That might be the dodgy injector.

But you have probably tried that already.

I haven't tried that yet, where do the injectors need to be cracked off, is it where they bolt on to the block or just the pipes that supply the fuel to them?

I do it at the feed pipes on top of the injectors
Just be aware you will get diesel out
Stick a used baking tray under the sump to catch the most of the diesel
