A mate took my Surf for it's MOT while I was at work and reported back that it was difficult to get any power out of it, it seems to start ok with the new Varta batteries, I thought I'd post a couple of pics of when I take the revs to 2000, the needle on the oil gauge rises by about a quarter of the way, I haven't checked it on a drive yet due to being at work.

didn't realise that the pics didn't post, checked them again and no turbo light showing. Having said that, the revs are only sitting at 1500. I'll take it out on Saturday if I don't get a chance before then and report back, I know my turbo is on its way out, theres some play on the spindle so might be worth checking out a replacement

No, it wasn't a problem before the MOT, it has been off the road for over a year while I rebuilt the engine after the head cracked. I know it wouldnt have been abused on the way to or from the MOT and it wasn't over revved during the MOT. I'm thinking its the turbo, but can't be sure until I get to drive it myself.

Although I know the turbo is suffering from use over time etc, I'm not convinced that it's the sole culprit in the issue.
I started it tonight and it was difficult to start, coughed and spluttered and sounded like it wasn't firing on all four cylinders. Moved it around the drive and it was running a little rough, but seemed fine when idling (although the entire engine was rocking a bit).
As far as I know, a diesel engine only needs glow plugs to actually start then they become redundant, I put my old glow plugs back when I rebuilt the engine, so I'll replace them with the new ones I have and see if that helps with starting.
I replaced the fuel primer with a good one from a scrap Surf but didn't change the fuel filter for a new one, so I'll change that and see if that makes a difference to the rough running.
The only other things I can think of are that the timing is out, it does run but sounds like it's just not quite right. I've checked the injection pump and the timing marks are still lined up, couldn't check the belt timing as it was too dark to start pulling it apart, don't know how it could have changed though when everything was torqued up correctly. Or, I have an injector (maybe more than one) that is dead.
Any other idea's?
