Yeah no probs, the info from ppppppppppenguin isn't what you should use, time the engine correctly, the 3 pulleys are already marked against points on the block, make sure you get all 3 lined up before removing the belt.

Dont even look into removing the pump until you have the belt off and are satisfied that its all lined up okay. It would also be a good idea to get a new cambelt kit while your'e at it.

Once the belt is off, focus on the pump, the pulley can be a bugger to get off as the nut is tight, yoy can get some m8x1.25 bolts and screw them into the threaded holes in the pulley, this locks it and then you can get the nut off.

Once the pulley is off, move everything you can out of the way. Get a clear view of what you are doing, unplug anything connected to the pump, then clean the area thoroughly where the pump bolts the the cam belt area, you will then see marks on the pump and block, make aure the lines join up and take a photo, the pump must go back in exactly the same place.

Next remove the 4 fuel lines at the rear, the bottom inner one can be an arse, either completely remove the pipes or you can slightly bend them away but its best not to.

Once these are out the way unblot the bracket that holds the pump to the block, its 3 bolts total at the pipe side of the pump, they are awkward, youay find it easier to unbolt the 2 on the block and leave the last one on the pump, you can get it out with it still attached.

Then finally remove the 2 that bolt it to the cambelt side, once off carefully work the pump out, it will be tight but be patient, have plenty of breaks and keep cool.

DONT FORGET TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERIES, hope this helps, any other questions feel free to ask.
well, that was a bad idea!

no need to slag people off who are trying to help others muddle as you quote you have never done one i have i do things the easy way i have better things to do than fuk about all day with motors why disconnect the battery is there a problem with the battery or are we just going by what the workshop manuals say when i did mine i buy a good second hand pump as i know the motor was running before and i am not changing the cam belt as i did that less than 6 months ago i just marked the pulley and belt then put the old pulley on the second hand pump put it bak on and away it went that gave me time to do the original pump in my free time simple as that max time to change the pump will be 2 hours if you are slow if your still having problems ask muddle who has never done one before to come and change it for you or if you live close to me i will give you my recon pump in exchange for your pump cannot get a better offer than that what do you say muddle

Also a tipex mark on a belt is helpful in some way.

Wait a minuite, that dosn't make sense!

Good advice. Shortcuts can lead to disaster.

Disconnect the battery or batteries because that is the safe thing to do, for both you and the vehicle.

Don't undetstand, why do I not know how to do it and where does,it say I never have? Why disconnect the batteries??? Thats a no brainer, so you dont accidently crank the engine with no belt on, or would that be okay.

Heres a suggestion, don't give bad advice.

              your words not mine
ever done one, but would be willing to try, aslong as your'e prepared to buy a new pump if it goes wrong.

obviously your very competent in your ability to do such a job if i was you i would leave it to the boys who do know

ho and dont forget to disconnect the battery next time you have a flat tyre you might accidently crank it over and it will fall of the jack
but the good news is my surf is running fine thanks his however is not

If you were to read it clearly states that I have not rebuilt a MECHANICAL pump on these surfs, there are 2 types you know.

So what you're saying is dont bother taking a minuite to undo 2 10mm nuts to diaconnect the negative termimals and risk destroying an engine, you may accidently bridge the starter terminals or someone else may crank it without realising.

I am more than competent but you clearly know better, and going by your so called advice, you're not one of the 'boys that know what they're doing'

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to be the cause of such argument, just wanted to get some advise on the diesel pump itself. Some time ago, when I bought my truck, I had to change the cylinder head because it was the typical japanese import with the head problem. I managed to change that ok although I am a little out of practice and might have taken an awful lot longer than someone who does that more often.
However, I do appreciate all of your input and all of your good advise as I do not know too much about the insides of a diesel pump like this one, in fact, I have seen many rotary pumps but this one looks different.
Anyway, thank you all very much, I will give it a go and will let you know

Not your fault bud like I said, when you have it out bring it to me and ill sort if for you, if you like that is. Only 20ish miles from you anyway.

Arguement was due to the fact I don't like people following bad advice.
