  • Clonking noise

I have a 1992 2.4 surf, and when I turn on full lock only, I get a kind of horrible clonking noise. It only happens on full lock, now I've just got a new mot, the only advisorys I got was all my ball joints need replacing in the future, They did one for me due to excessive wear, but the others have got some life left in them yet.

I've been told that all surfs do this and it's nothing to worry about. is this true? if so, does anyone know what is causing the noise? as harmless or not, I would like to sort it as it's annoying, and a tad embarressing.

You have 4 nylon / plastic caps that wear through on the steering stops, if you put your Surf on full lock you will see where they hit to stop the steering going any further (I hope I'm making sense). Put some grease where they touch, there are 2 located at the front and 2 behind the wheel.
If at first you don't succeed.........give up.

just put some grease on the stops as they should already be at the right setting

No need to adjust them, just put a generous dollop of grease on them
