    Spots The Problem?

been reading these overheating threads and it seems like a high percentage of 2.4s get this problem often inexplicably, happened to mine a week ago, had pressure test, changed thermostat, replaced rad cap (Havent flushed yet) no water from exhaust, no water in oil, checked radiator for crud, checked for obstruction of wind flow between radiator and grill. only happening on long journeys I am wondering if it is possible that the spots on the bull bar maybe restricting air flow just enough so that it is a slow build up of heat culminating in over heating after high number of miles?

Possibly, but the main problem is a design fault in the cylinder heads that makes them crack at the first sign of overheating. Mix that with a temperature guage that only shows 'cold', 'normal' and 'cracked head' and you've got problems. You need to keep the cooling system in tip top condition at all times.

My 3.0 got the cracks in the top tank after a motorway run. Flushed everything, soldered cracks, re-filled, all fine. Good Luck
Yes! It's still in the garage. M1ROD

"the main problem is a design fault in the cylinder heads "

My log book says it was manufactured in 1993, so it shouldnt have the design fault... should it?

So imagine I have done everything. flushed, burped, rad cap, hoses, pressure test...no oil in water, no water in oil, no water from exhaust, no gases in coolant, fans working whatelse could it be?

When doing the thermostat I noticed there was no gasket when I removed the bolts etc, is this correct or does it need one?

A pressure test would have brought to light any cracks in the head or if the head gasket is goosed surely?

The Surf's are a nice motor but it took me four stops to achieve a 250 mile round trip.

with the head although you may have the later 2.4 there is still the possibility that the head can go.It will come down to how well the truck was looked after before you got it aswell.

The thermostat should of had a rubber seal around it so there would be no need to have a gasket on the housing

as with any engine that overheats!

The pressure test would have picked up a cracked head Garage says its ok,its really confusing. If the flush, burp and removal of spot lights dosnt do it, it will overheat alright!
