Your the respected mechanic on here Tony so whatever you recommend is cool with me. If I have leaned the mix out to below normal but not enough to do long term harm as the engine stands now, when I fit the intercooler and jack out the wastegate would I have to richen the mixture to above normal to compensate for the cooler air and extra pressure ( assuming that neither I nor anyone else had altered it in the first place ant it was still at the factory setting)? Doesnt the fuel delivery need altering from time to time to compensate for wear on the engine anyway like most other engines? Ive had a lot of older cars where the mix screw has to be turned in a bit to compensate for slight overfueling due to worn jets and needles. My karma ran over my dogma ..

Simple answer. Any engine, other than one which has been tuned, can be tweaked. However, you shouldn't starting making random changes unless you are monitoring things. Absolute minimum you should have to monitor it for these types of mods are an accurate coolant temp gauge and a pyro/EGT gauge. Those two between them will let you know how well the engine itself is coping.

Cheers Matt. I have a relatively accurate temp guage ( disconnected the original and fitted a pod mounted one) but whats a pyro/EGT gauge and what does it measure (apart from pyro's and ETG's) ?Originally posted by MattFSimple answer. Like Matt said, anything can be altered a little, its knowing when to stop, most manufactures err on the side of reliability, so you have scope to alter it a little, without it blowing up in your face, but there is a limit, to rich, to lean, to much boost, etc.... will always end in tears, or my wages..
I don't know how far you can go, learn from others mistakes.

so just to ask the same question again Tony, isnt there a recommended starting point for this adjusment screw, so many turns out from fully home, so i can figure out where it should have been in the first place? If the pump were stripped for a rebuild there must be an approximate starting point to set it to ?My karma ran over my dogma ..

Not really, I guess they are all similar as they are built the same, but if you where servicing the pump, its supposed to be set when you have the pump on a test bench, by cc's of liquid squirted at a set RPM, and stuff like that.Originally posted by Billy-No-Moneyso just to ask the same question again Tony, isnt there a recommended starting point for this adjusment screw, so many turns out from fully home, so i can figure out where it should have been in the first place? Deisel pumps are far intricate than carbs, and you need lots of specialist tools to set them up.
If you get a couple of people to see how many turns, from bottom to how it is now it would give you rough idea, but I try not to mess with the pumps to much as they are expensive to sort out. and it can go pear shaped quickly.

cheers chaps. Ill work on the premise that there is a little leaway with the adjusment and take it back to a quarter turn anti clockwise from where I started. By the way,Indicative Indication is a redundant syntax. I may not know much about engines but me grammer int arf good.

Actually, it's not.Originally posted by Billy-No-MoneyBy the way,Indicative Indication is a redundant syntax.
An indication is merely a notification of something. An indicative indication is an enhanced and more precise notification/quantification of a base [something]. (When will you lot ever learn)?
