  • Intercooler options

After looking at various ways the oz guys have mounted intercoolers, and today looking at various intercoolers where my brother works, it seems that the best (by way of fitting at least) option is the RX7 intercoolers.
Has anybody here fitted the RX7 intercooler, if so, did it go on as easily as it looks like it should and what problems were/have been encountered since, if any.
I was thinking of fitting one with a scoop of sorts (any suggestions for which scoop) to compensate for the space needed as i don't fancy lifting at this present time.
Also, what other intercoolers have worked (top or front mounted) for you guys?
Or are we all waiting for Bushwhacker to come and do all of ours for us! (if so, can i be 1st sir !?!)
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

i can confirm the intercooler from a 406 tdi is no use. it fits staight to the manifold so i'd need to make an outlet pipe for it. and its too big. i am not bitter.
    it's in me shed, mate.

yeah was looking at them today. Not many top mounted ones out there and don't fancy the aggro of fitting at the front. will be looking at others tomorrow, they getting alot of insurance write off stuff coming in, so will have a poke about see what looks compatible.
someone had a pajero intercooler-what they like?

I have an RX7 intercooler, not fitted it yet 'cos I got clearance issues, (can't get the bonnet down untill I cut the hole for the scoop!)
I got it from Ebay, £14. Have a look, there were a few knocking about on there.

Yeah, been looking, is the one you're playing with the FD3 type, which i think is mounted to the front on the RX7 but the way the pipes line up look good for top mounting to surfs, and with scoop on, in theory everything should be dandy.

i think with a 2"+ body lift you could pretty much get any top mounting cooler in there and piping etc, how much are you going to lift by?

i'm searching around because i don't fancy lifting just yet and something like the RX7 with scoop looks viable.

What would you do with an intercooler with a dump valve outlet, just block it or what?

no idea with the dump valve i guess block it yeah.
im lifting by 2" or just under.
ive been looking for space.... anyone else think that above the fuel filter is a good place? everything is much lower than the engine as long as the airbox is not in your way.
the only prob i can see is putting a scoop in that area of the bonnet

Mine looks like this. As you can see, it's a simple in and out connection directly above the turbo outlet and inlet manifold.

Dump valve connections are normally on the pipes that connect onto the intercooler, not actually on the intercooler.

Tim, don't forget that when installing the intercooler, you will need to remove the silver tube with the DIESEL EFI turbo on it, this will give a bit more room to play with.

yes i do keep forgetting that, plus it makes the pluming easier. i think i might be able to 90degree right out of the turbo and see waht happens at t'other end. i need an inlet for one end of the intercooler anyway as it is flush at the mo so ill have it made to measure

i was wondering about rerouting the black pipe too around the front - anyone done that? then you would have loads of space on top. my fuelcat might be in the way too nothing like a challenge (middle of bonnet scoop would be easiest i think)

just looked at engine pic and black pipe reroute would be a nightmare. ill be wanting an oil catch tank too - heard a good mod is to buy a water bottle for a push bike (metal one) and drill 2 holes in it and stick the pipes through ! genious! it will have a removable cap and a holder would be really easy too!

What a fantastic idea, I am still not sure about the lifting mod, but I would think that then I'd be needing a big tall scoop, and I am unsure about the legal requirements, like blocking vision, that kinda thing...

When I done a test fit, all I need realy is two 90 degree elbows. One of which needs to be a reducer type as the outlet from the turbo is smaller than the inlet on the cooler.

                              sounds easy for you
will be interested to see how you get on.

just taken all my washers out of mine today (bought it with one lot on and didnt know for a year - then added another lot) so im back to standard. only boosts at 0.6 bar now, was nudging 0.8 before but i want to see how it runs now until i get the intercooler fitted without messing around with boost.
