  • Very lumpy tickover on cold starting

    Hello,

Now that the colder weather is coming, the surf is getting very ‘lumpy’ when first started in the morning.

I fitted new glow plugs in the summer, and it has recently had new oil, oil filter and fuel filter. Both batteries have been replaced this February. I have checked the plugs – they are exactly the same as the old ones.

It turns over strongly enough with the starter, but first tick over is rough and smelling of un-burnt diesel. After a few seconds its fine.

Holding the starter engaged for a few seconds helps, as does turning the ignition on a couple of times before starting (seems to give the glow plugs some extra heat).

Any ideas – it was similar to this last winter, I thought the new glow plugs would have sorted this.

    Best regards

It deffo sounds like the glow plugs, are you sure they are OK, I've known cheap aftermarket ones to only last 6 months, swapped some out that where newish a while back for a new set from Roughtrax and it cured all the problems.

Mine is doing the same thing, and had new glowplugs from Milners a few months ago. Runs just fine but for those first 2 or 3 seconds feels like only 3 cylinders are working. Rebuilt with new head about a year ago, had a new battery about 8 months ago also, and an oil change recently with new filter (but not got a new air filter yet).

id just be glad thats our only trouble, at least it runs. the idle up button is for just such occasions
however on the subject of glow plugs
disconnect the bus bar and measure the resistance of the plug with a multimeter on ohms of course
one lead on the screw the other on the block
high reading is great - higher resistance more heat generated
low resistance is poor - low heat and slow warm up of the plug
resulting in it seeming to run on 3 cylinders or even less for that matter

dont just remove the plugs whack them on a battery to see how bright they glow!!!! dangerous and will tell you nothing

I had found as the temp drops by the morning the surf was a wee bit lumpy at idle for first few seconds but I now leave ignition on till buzzer sounds (which I found by accident) she runs sweet right from cold if I wait till buzzer sounds before starting. Won't have that problem for few weeks using insurance vw polo car till comes back from venison straighteners.
Having venison curry tonight, was chlli last night grilled night before can't wait till christmas then I can do same with the turkey.

              Cheers JB

The buzzer is only to let you know youve left the ignition on, the plugs are only on while the light on the dash is on, theyre getting cold after.
My surf also splutters like its not on all cylinders in the morning.
Ive had my plugs checked a new primer pump and filter, Ive been told by a diesel mechanic that she sounds sweet but the problem lies with the turbo, the seals are gone.
Ive got a topic on my turbo, this is aparently blowing oil and when cold the burnt oil thats blown through changes viscosity and the car finds it harder to start when cold, I often have to tow start it, until I send my turbo to turbotechnics.

interesting idea mate - I might look into this further. my seals are blowing oil im sure... going to fit an oil catch tank to see if its the blow by or turbo thats letting oil by.

But turbos generally don't do anything til about 1500-2000rpm, how would a turbo affect the starting of a diesel engine?!?!

im guessing cos he thinks there might be oil left in the inlet pipes?

no idea but I know something aint right...

Its what the turbos done while youve been driving thats the problem, while the cars still warm itll start fine but as soon as its cold itll turn over for ages before it starts and flatten the battery, then when it starts its as lumpy as ****.

When the light goes out on dash the plugs can still be warming up I tested this with my old escort and when light goes out the thing is difficult to start, but wait for the switch to click off few seconds later and its fine so I think that's same as surf wait till you hear the plug heater switching off seems to do it with both my escort and surf there both old.

Mine stands all week unused, if I try and start it when glow plug light goes out it coughs and sputters and usually won't go, however as mentioned leave it until you here the relay click and she'll start first time.
                              Should have bought a 3ltr
