another idea ive had, my idle is a bit low at the mo so i guess starting with a low idle isnt helping (550-600rpm)

This is not the case. the plugs heat for a couple of minutes after the engine has been started. (put a volt meter on one and see) Try heating the plugs for 20-30 seconds before starting the engine. This should help.

tried to leave the glowplugs on for 20-30 secs and it didnt start to well.

very cold this morning and im trying out a 90%veg 10%petrol at the mo.
starts better than 50/50 derv/veg but doesnt idle too well. driving is fine though.

            Hi
On my truck : 1992 LN130 glow plug sequence is as follows. Starting from cold.
Ignition on and glow plugs fire up at full power (Superglow) for a time determined by engine temp.
Then the relay drops out. The plugs are now run at approx half power by the second relay which supplies power to the plugs through a resistor in the bottom of the inlet manifold (this is basically another glow plug). This is the after glow. The duration of this after glow is determined by engine temperature.
Most of this glow plug control is done by the glow plug timer which also has the temperature monitoring circuits in it.
Note : some models also have glow plug current sensing. (mine doesn't)
some other models just have a straight forward timer for the plugs with no after glow. To check the glow plug system properly you need to check the following items :-
            Glow plug relay No 1
            Glow plug relay No 2
Glow plug resistor in the manifold
            Timer relay
            Glow plugs

            Hope this helps.
            JJON

Normal is just a wash setting.

I have lump cold starting recently, but I know that my injectors need changing. This weekend I;'ll have new glowplugs, injectors, oil and Air Filters and a new Rocker Cover gasket (mines seeping at the mo) I;'ll let you know the results next week.

                lumpy starting

Hi iv'e read this with interest as i suffered the same prob, until one day She would not start at all.Turns out the no start was lack of fuel caused by air leak on fuel filter hand pump, this is not servicable, so a replacement was fitted. After fitting She now starts from cold with no uneveness at all.Makes me wonder if it has been slowly getting worse until air leak became big enough to allow fuel to drain back to the tank.Maybe worth a look.

thats very interesting as my hand pump i dont think really does much, it takes weeks to pump through after a change so I try and fill it with treatment to stop the problem.

how much was the replacement by the way?
