  • Opinion on new head pictures and pressure testing block?

Calling all surfers who have any knowledge of 2.4 head problems (ie. most of you!). Have had recon head fitted ( before I knew about Stevo!) but still boiling up and losing all water through header tank. Took head off and sent back for pressure testing. Head passed the 50 PSI pressure test (stevo says this is inconclusive as engine pressure is 500psi+). They say now that it must be a cracked block. Has anyone had a cracked block, I understand this is extremely rare. The garage say they know someone who can prssure test the blcok in position upto something like 300psi. Has anyone heard of this? What are peoples thoughts?

If block passes test plan to get knew head off of Stevo. Then fingers crossed. I have taken some pictures of block and head please have a look and let me know if you can see something I can't........ need all your advice and experience. If you think this is a familiar story - can anyone beat 12 weeks of work without sorting a cracked head?

Thank god it's not just me! At least I've had the rad core done, thermostat changed, viscous fan checked, matrix core changed...blah, blah...! If only I'd known about Stevo before- I'm in London so it's a bit of a trek, but it does sound worth it. Problem is know surf is in bits so I'm stuck with these guys. Might try and use Tonyn in Basingstoke if he comes as highly reccommended. Maybe Stevo is the best guy to ask about this Block pressure test, trouble is trying not to waist his time - he's been more than generous with his time already. Anyway thanks for making me feel slightly better about the money that's flowing like water at the moment - with no positive outcome. Trouble is I love the car but bought it to work for me and at the moment I feel like it's more of an enthusiasts motor - you kind of need to enjoy it's idio - watsits! - (if the block test is good and the new head from Stevo works I will publicly apologise for my bad words against the surf!).

I would look at simple things like
Was it filled and bled correctly, most common mistake made
Is the viscous fan working correctly
                water pump
                incorrectly fitting head gasket
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

                My 4x4
                My choice
                Back off

It worked! Never done a cylinder head replacement before, but it seems to be working perfectly (touch wood, fingers crossed etc...) - just that slight whistle I mentioned in the other thread - any ideas about that anyone?

I would recommend Stevo's services also - he has been very helpful.

Errr well I was trying to avoid wasting Stevo's time. I've bothered him more than once now and I'm sure I'm not the only one. He has so many endorsements on the site. But if there is nobody on the forum who has heard of it, then that doesn't seem good. I'll try Stevo on Tuesday. Thanks for your help anyway. Glad to know that some surfs out there are enjoying a new lease of life.

                          block test

Gareth, I have never heard of this in situ block test, I would consider it to be a very dangerous thing to do at the pressure quoted, the reason a pressure test is usually restricted to around 50 psi is not to force out any core plugs or such-like from the head you are testing, I have been on the recieving end of a blown core plug at 50psi and believe me it flies out like an exocet missile. Where are the pics ?
                          Cheers Steve.

                            Hi Stevo
Yeah I have to say that you have confirmed my concerns, thought it all sounded too good to be true. The photos I have taken seem to be too big to post on the forum. I have sent them to TonyN and asked him to forward them onto you. Is there another way of getting them to you/forum?

Dont worry - we'll resize and send on to Stevo.
edit - no sign of the pics yet Gareth??
