  • Just taken up surfing, now i'm 'pinking' too! Help, please...

    Hi there,
I recently traded in a Honda CRV I accidentally owned for 3 years, for a 1995 3.0l manual. What a motor! I love it love it love it.

I've spent a bit of money on a full on service, cv gaiters and ball joints on the front, anti roll bars etc. I wanna spend more time and money keeping this bad boy going strong...

I have a concern about the 'pinking' noise that seems to be pretty persistent when under even the slightest load. A specialist diesel mechanic told me it's probably a fuel pump re build, estimate £1400!!! Roughtrax told me it's likely to be the fuel primer head, £104 + vat + fitting, possibly glow plugs £110 + vat.

Two questions, 1 - is the 'pinking' doing damage? 2 - has anyone any thoughts aside from those mentioned above.

Please advise... I've gone from thinking I've bought a complete pup, to believing there's hope!

The pinking could be caused by a seized, pump timing control valve. It is fairly easy to remove the TCV
Remove the TCV and use the hand primer pump to push in diesel and let it flow out of the Injection Pump aperture where the TCV was installed. Check the TCV for specified values. Clean the TCV and re-install, it should (hopefully) work normally again.
I figured some amount of dirt/water gets into the IP and settles at the base where the TCV is Installed, a good bleed from the base while the TCV is removed cleans the base which is filled with diesel all the time.
To test the TCV disconnect the electrical connector, and using an ohmmeter measure the resistance between the terminals. The resistance should be between 10-14 ohms at 20 degrees centigrade.

Thanks surfenstein, I'm gonna have a look this weekend. I've recently filled with supreme diesel and some additive, it's helped.
You're salisbury plain? I'm Frome. You know any good surf doctors? The mechanic I use is awesome but I feel like the surf needs specialised attention...
      I appreciate your response mate,
      All the best

          Hi there,
I popped over to your unit in Engineers road and left my card with the guy opposite 'manipulating pipes'!!
Wondered if we might be able to arrange a time for me to come by, to see whether you can give the surf a once over and try and diagnose a couple of niggly noises?
          All the best,
          Stu

                            Really appreciate all this Mark.
Roughtrax don't have the fan coupling in stock ATM. I don't know what the lead time is on items like this they don't have in stock... It's possible it'll be available in the next week or so, I'll call them on Tuesday anyway. I'm assuming it makes sense to have it done at the same time as all the rest of the work at the front?
I'm keen on you guys making up a Stainless exhaust. Can you explain "Centre exhaust"?!
Otherwise, I'll get everything else and give you a shout asap.
Enjoyed meeting all you chaps yesterday, love the set up! Thanks for all your help so far mate.

No problem at all, glad we could help.We can get round the fan coupling if needs be. There is a fix for them its just time consuming. By centre exhaust I mean, 3" side exit just in front of the rear wheels this will help to bring your EGTs down and aid cooling.
