I can see what Vince is getting at but been more than happy using ours as the main family transport every day for 2 years now. Been great for camping, cruises fine down to Tenby, and sure-footed in the Winter. If I had a massive commute, I would have something else, but the V70 will still sup some..

I have just got rid of my Surf due to all the reasonable arguments on here. Two cars, only me drives, bit of an expensive toy etc. It was both cars wanting taxing together that forced my hand. Mrs said keep the surf for when it snows - common sense said keep boring estate car. So; got rid of sensible estate car AND Surf and bought Legacy estate to sort of cover both bases.
Have to say, missing the Surf like crazy and seem to be spending every Sunday night looking at Third Gens on the bay. Driving the Surf always made me smile.
Oh, and the Legacy does less to the gallon than the Surf. No, really!湯

The Lady Boss has a Mercedes CL500 as her daily driver so we can appreciate the comments about MPG, and my commute is about 14 mile round trip. This would still be about a gallon of fuel per day (£7 ish)....but still, I do want one
Is it me or is there something about surf's that just get you needing one (and missing them when they are gone in some cases!!)

And yes, this is my daily drive and company vehicle. Sits nicely on the motorway at legal speeds and took 4 of us and camping equipment from Kiddy to Devon only last week
The only thing I would say is if I had to do a daily commute of any significant length, I probably wouldn't pick the surf as the most appropriate modus operandi..."B.A." Baracus: "Talk to me, talk sense so I can talk back. Not all this jibberjabber like breaking the peace and all that."

We were considering storing the Surf and getting a more economical 4 x 4 on motability. Then decided that it would be better to trade in Surf on a Jeep or Sorento, but this would have meant HP.
Finally yesterday we drove down to Swindon and bought a second hand 1996 Toyota Corolla Solair SE 1.3 auto with a full service history and one previous owner. It does about 50mpg on a long run with a combined mpg of 40mpg. It works out that we should save about £60 per month as the Surf will be used mainly for towing the caravan and the odd occasion when we cannot use the Corolla.
We are going to try it out for several months, however if it does not work out and we have to sell the Corolla, we will not lose very much at all!

Based on the way you phrased your question the sensible choice is obviously the Volvo. No surprise.
But you don't want to know what is the more reliable better family car. You already know the answer to that. You want to be told that the decision that you have already made in your heart is not a silly unjustifiable one.
Surfs are great. Buy one. Have fun. In due course you may decide to sell it and buy a more "sensible" car. Like a Volvo.
In the meantime live a little.
Just my 2 cents
