From What i understand most of the other laws relate to licence type and when test was passed. I've towed all sorts of stuff with a 2.4 surf over the years and never had a problem - and yes I've been stopped many times!

wow lots of different opinions and facts and figures. i was always of the opinion towing weight as a guide line can not exceed the weight of the towing vehicle, but thats just me no facts to back it up lol.

I will keep pulling the horses with my surf as the previous owner has for 5 years previously. but thanks for all the info

The info you have given is wrong and mis leading!!
The nearest thing to the Surf is the 4 Runner, which is plated and rated.I know this, because I've had a Runner, and my Surf is now plated as part of it's registration process in France.

The Towing Capacity is 2200 KG's

                        As I quoted before

                        Front axel 1260 KG
                        Rear axle 1460 KG
                        Fully Loaded 2510 KG
                        GWT 4710 KG

These are not figures I've found on the internet,or got from a mate, they have come from under my bonnet, from a plate stamped by Toyota.
Despite the 4 Runner having a different name the model no on the VIN is still KZN130 and I see no reason why this info should not be the same for the LN130.

                        Regards

                        Mark

Do you understand that we are talking about a 2.4L diesel which cannot tow more than 1500kgs?
I think that if the gross train weight is more than 3500kg then you need to obtain a B+E driving licence. This probably means that the trailer should weigh no more than 3500kg minus the vehicle gross weight.

You only need the "+E" on you licence if you passed your test after 01/01/1997 - Before that you can drive upto 7.5 tonne (7500KG) on a standard car license
