  • Wheelarch trouble - help needed!

    Evenin all!

So Ive got a 2 inch body and 2 inch sus lift running 33's, wheel spacers fitted to clear the inner arch and Im now getting significant interference with the lower rear edge of the wheel arch / wing where the mud flaps bolt on at 3/4 lock (worse with any articulation -even just coming on and off my drive!) and the outer edge of the tyre.

Had a go today at taking the mud flaps off and its quite clear that the edge at the bottom is the problem - the mudflaps were in fact lessening the tyre grabbing the bodywork despite them being worn through so it pretty horrendous now.

Whats the cure? Im considering dressing the edge back with a hammer as I think I probably only need at the most 10mm extra to solve the problem. If I do whats behind the edge? ie body shell or open space and has anyone got any tips as to what they did or indeed another fix?

Hoping the weather will be better tommorrow so I ca give it a go!

Yea take the mudflaps off and hammer the edge of the sill back so it sits flush.I had the same issues with my old 2nd gen

Cheers Stormforce - When you say hammer the end of the sill back did you knock it back at 45deg so that the end result was a slope backed edge rather than a 90 edge?

Im a visual kind of guy if you have any pics of the end result would be really helpful?

No pics sorry but i just hammered it back flat against the sill and that solved the problem.TonyN has done the same thing also
I hammered it upwards and not under the sill if you get what i mean

I just took my flaps off... no bashing, no nothing. only get a rub in reverse!
            job done.
            What wheels are you using?

              33/ 12.5/ 10.5 AT's

Flaps off this afternoon now worse than ever as its catching on a sharp 90 deg edge.

Mine does it in forward and reverse if it was jacked up another inch or so it would stop on the road (although that being said it does it more in reverse than forward) but then would no doubt just come back under articulation so may as well hammer back the metal work first and if its still causing a problem look to see what else I can do to remedy it.

As Wolfracer says, what wheels are fitted? Do you know their offset?

I have the same lift as you and do not have any rubbing. I've fitted 30mm wheel spacers and now they rub at full lock at the places you've mentioned. I've just left it as is, although the front corner mouldings on the bumper touched slightly so I trimmed it smoothly with a grinder.

My wheels are -43 offset and my 33's are 12.5" wide.

                Do you have any photos?

I don't quite follow this. Are you definitely sure the rubber of the tyres are catching the body? What do you mean by stop on the road? What is the condition of your CV angles?

This is where they are touching.

Not sure on offset etc as they were on there when I bought the truck.

CV angles are good not far from level

By on the road I mean on the level ie it will do it when manouvreing in a car park and if the truck was slightly higher it would probably miss the arch when not compressed but this wont stop it catching when the wheel is compressed into the arch.

Not all the lifted trucks have the problem but quite a few do.It won't do any harm just to bash the sill edge back and see how it is from there. The tyes and wheels i had fitted were 33x12.5x15 on 15 x10 rims with a -52 off-set so i had a lot of rubbing on mine

I'd say your rims are whats causing this, mine are the same (i reversed the inner/outer rim halfs, makeing the wheels "stick out" further, i had to do some drastic anglegrinding to get clearance, plus hammer the seam back,

Get the alignment done, the camber and castor angles might be miles out, it def helps, had mine done recently, the bloke will level the torsion bars too, make sure it's the same on both sides.

I see you have done the same bumper end cap mod as I did yesterday

The offset is amplified by the spacers if Im correct so if the arch tinkering and camber / castor doesnt work maybe machining a little of the spacer might help? Obviously not too much to start hitting the inner arch again.
