Thats right, spacers or altering the rims has the effect of makeing the "arc" of turn wider so instead of the wheel pivoting on it's central axis the wheel actually has to roll in order to turn (steer) another downside to this is you cant steer (full lock) and break hard, the brakes lock up the steering (mot guy pointed this out to me), BUT i've had no probs with that, your hardly likely to be breaking hard and turning hard at the same time, if you do you'll prob be skidding anyway
As KERRSURF said either lining up the torsion bars or winding em up a bit might just do the trick, or it some serious FBH applied to the chaffing point just dont knock the inner wing into the footwell as theres a fuse box in there
Too young to die and too old to give a toss

As a start Ive knocked the lower part of the wing upwards into the recess. and flattened the seam then trimmed the arch liner and trimmed the mudflap and that seems to have a made a fair bit of extra room

Im waiting to sort some landcruiser rear springs and balljoint spacers then the front can come up a little more - if necessary I can revisit the arches as there is a little bit more room for hammering - can always move the fusebox out the way Thanks for the heads up!
