Im neither pro nor anti-royal. I dont know what the cost balance is between their benefit to the country and what it costs to keep them. Im not envious of their privileged lives in any way. I dont much care about their weddings or any other aspect of their lives, and I wish them no harm.in fact I wish them all happiness. I do think that they are largely irrelevant nowadays as they dont actually make the rules and punish the transgressors any more.
Syria dont have a Royal family, but I suppose the Hafez family are the equivalent of what our royals were not so many hundreds of years ago. A family who rule, who make the rules, and who sort out the dissidents by any effective means.
In different circumstances any of us could be the Royal family. They are only there because their ancestors were bigger, meaner, nastier, more ruthless, and with better gangs

Get rid, tourists will still come to see all the castles and palaces plus they can go see where they are all interred
God knows how much money went down the pan over these past few weeks in the way of security etc just so some inbred`s can get married and produce more leeches it might have done London some good but thats where it ends
Dont care what goes on in other countries. Personally i dont need or want someone to look up to as superior especially when there not

I am not sure that you are fully taking into account the net effect on the economy. Think of the unemployment surge amongst locksmiths, probation officers, suppliers of replacement electrical equipment and alloys...

They will go ( in their present form) eventually, and go totally at some point.I have no doubts about it. They have been "getting away with it" for years now and Im sure they know this too, they are royal, not stupid. There is no place in any country for a " ruling family" when they are not actually doing the ruling. If they continue to exist Im sure it will be in a slimmed down form, like other European monarchys. I dont think Royal Families were ever really looked up to as superior, and if they were it was in the same way that "mob" bosses are looked up to as superior, and for exactly the same reasons. Fear of your life if you crossed them, and their ability to give you stuff if you sucked up to them

                      Some perspective.

£41.5 million. That was the cost to the state of the Royal Family in 2008-09, down from £87m odd in 1991 - 1992. Its about 69p per year a head per annum. Not an amount that would drive me to want to have them killed or arrested, but there we go - perhaps 69p is worth more in the North.

Of course that doesn't take into account any benefit to tourism etc. You may not like them, but by god the Yanks do. Just see how nuts they have gone over there about this wedding. Hey ho.

Of course if they were replaced by another head of state (and they would be - probably Simon Cowell or Tony Blair), we would have to pay for him. The cost of the Royals is actually fairly favourable compared to the average cost of a head of state in non monarchist countries. But then I suppose he would bring that undefinable Blair/Cowell charm.

As for the idea of "inbred people" producing yet more people who "leech" off the state, well yes that does sound bad.

And if we are going to deal in hackneyed cliches...
£164.7 BILLION. That was the level of welfare benefits in 2009 - 2010. Up from £140 billion the year before. More than the entire income tax take for the year. Presumably you would advocate a law preventing welfare claimants from reproducing? Not wanting to invoke Goodwin's law or anything, but err...

There are many good reasons for not wanting a monarchy (although suggesting that they should be shot or arrested does betray a certain level of irrationality). But cost isn't really one of them.

Does that mean we have to get rid of Norfolk?

Did you ever go to a little pub on the other side of the Malverns just off that windy road down into Colwall? I forget its name. That was my old man's local - I used to love it in there.

Yeah but you now live in Guildford which is a bit like a commoner marrying in to royalty! so now you're upper class!
