roughtrax first bad experience

      They must have changed the design mate as I have never had an issue with them.

        Mate, I'm not digging on you but I did wince when you said you fitted them with a press, I wouldn't, you have little control of the pressure used and could easily knock a needle bearing loose or try to press it to far in and break something and bugger things up

        Personally I'd have told you not to use a press, but fit next one by hand, but sent you another one anyway.

        Sometime I feel a little held to ransom by the internet and do get a little frustrated having to fix things that are blatently user error, but its not worth this sort of post against your name, but thats the price you pay for trading via the internet, but if it happens alot I can see someone getting the hump in the end.

        If you can hand on your heart 100% say you could'nt have done anything wrong fitting them then rant away, personally I couldn't. (especially using a press )

        I DO have a problem with the current UJ's RT are selling, you can't grease them once installed, but I havn't had a chance to speak to anyone yet.

          fair enough but as i said im not bothered about the uj as im having one fitted by proptech in kidderminster as we speak and they even commented on the nipple placement etc but it was the attitude of the person i spoke to
          i wasnt nasty or even moaning on the phone, i rang up and politely said i was after some advice as it had failed after just 10miles, and before i even finished my sentence he butted in and sternly said "youve fitted it wrong , these are a well known make and DONT just break , ive fitted loads and never had a faulty one so its your fault "
          then when i asked if he wanted to see the broken part he basically said no theres no point as it was my fault .

          thats whats annoyed me as up until this ive always been happy with roughtrax but with customer service like that its put me off buying from them again

                For what it's worth, I wouldn't judge a company on one bad experience on a telephone like this. When it comes to whoever you were speaking to on the phone you never know what their day has been like before the point at which you phoned. Did their dog die this morning? Have they just found out the wife is shagging the milkman? Did they get a puncture on the way to work? Etc...

                Anyone can have a bad day, after all.

                  the only probs i have had when fitting uj,s is when one of the needles falls out and your trying to press on it to fit the circlip, but i go with the fact that the customer is not always right but send him another one for the sake of a couple of quid , and good customer relations

                    Yep, one or more needles falling out is the only thing I've ever had problems with in the past. Using a vice or clamp to re-assemble the joint will show this up very quickly.

                    What did you use, in the press, as a jig?

                      I agree with you Tony. I have just got some from Milners (£5 each less than R/T) and they are exactly the same. The grease nipple is impossible to get to with a normal sized grease gun! A fundemental problem tbh!

                        Hi Chaps just thought I'd better follow up on the posts being made.
                        I'm not going to get in a big heated debate over whom said what other than that not all what’s been depicted is entirely correct and as said.
                        Yes its true I have fitted hundreds of these UJ's to all makes and models, and I do strongly believe that on this occasion to crack out the end of a case hardened UJ cap can only be done by in my opinion dropping or cracking a needle roller upon assembly or some form of contaminant entering the cap, especially when I was initially told that on assembly using the "press" it snatched as the caps where assembled, or words to that effect. A UJ end cap won’t just break out unless excessive force has been applied in some form or fashion and once driven would then cause failure.
                        My words on fitting were that caps are an interference fit within the flanges, not pop in.
                        UJ's should always be checked after fitment for smoothness in either operating plain or if tight, rectified, never forced.
                        Fitting of some components isn’t as always as it seems and some parts take trained experience. Failure of a part isn’t always down to the part fitted, infact more often not and a reason for the initial failure should also always be checked out and not just assumed that its that part causing an issue, this is true with any repair. Warranty will only cover a defective part, not if caused by incorrect fitment or another force causing that failure.
                        As many customers know we always honour our warranties and will always continue to do so, but we won’t, indeed cant as a company, honour parts failure that’s not down to the part no matter how large or small.
                        Should the customer wish to call me and discuss it further with the findings from the prop shaft company that fitted the new UJ then I’m happy to listen.

                          I didn't say it snatched when fitting at all.
                          It was checked after fitting and was smooth
                          And as for the bit about only offering warranty if a part is found to be faulty , you weren't even interested in looking at the old part your answer was that it was obviously fitted wrong.
                          I just collected my prop which has been fully refurbished and has a uj fitted which has a nipple that's fully accessible when fitted . So no if your going to come on here calling me a liar then I'm not interested in calling you to discus at all . I notice you didn't comment about other people having issues with the positioning of the grease nipple etc as this is obviously a problem .
                          I was changing my mind about using roughtrax again but after reading this post I've be swayed the other way again

                          So comment all you like to make yourself look better as we both know the truth about what was said in the phone conversation don't we!

                                Arguments about who said what aside,I can't see how a UJ can possibily break a cap in use? It just can't happen, the forces are all wrong, it MUST have been broken before or during installation, a snap ring wasn't fitted correctly and it worked its way out or the prop is damaged where they fit.

                                Something needs to move to break or crack, and it dosn't move once fitted, the needle rollers just roll around inside it, they don't even move that far

                                Even the most mullered UJ with no bearings left and worn yoke dosn't break a cap, just wears it away.

                                Confused....

                                (edit....just re-read this, not being harsh or a dig at you, but if I'd had this problem I'd assume it was my fault fitting it bady, as thats the logical answer to what happened.)
