Drained filter. Pumped it until it got hard(fnarr) opened drain and fuel came out so it would seem that a) the fuel lines are clear from the tank b) the seals on the filter are OK.

I'm going to try blowing through the heat exchanger and see if its clear (although its sold for this purpose I have no idea of the internals)

Have you checked all fuses ?? are you getting power to the stop solenoid??

Have you confirmed that all the timing marks are lined up yet?

And have you run any codes?

according to that sound [video] you have 1 or more cylinders down on compression

              Hi Vince

Funnily enough only just done that (I was trying to turn the engine using the A (cam sprocket?) to no avail but just did it by using B but needed someone else to check from above to see when the marks lined up) Note- this clearly isn't my engine - too damn clean for a start!)

So I lined it up so the tooth on the upper cog that has the notch out of it was at 12 o'clock. This seemed to work with the other white marks nearby (at 2 o'clock). See pics

The lower pump sprocket was harder to see but there was what look like two painted white marks at around 12 o'clock that lined up

Also, there is what I think is the metal indicator at around 2 oclock which was lined up with a small notch on the sprocket itself (not sure if this is the matching indicator mark on the sprocket or it just happens to have a notch out of it. Had a read of some threads and I'm still not clear) Also I can't get a clear pic so hope this might make some sense.

              Cheers

Paul - wish i'd seen this thread earlier!!
I had very similar probs last year when running on veg. There is a small strainer on the suction pipe inside the tank which clogs esp' when tank gets below half full. it ran lumpy for a while and miss a beat then die. I also found when this happened it was very hard to prime the filter - plunger would stick in "pressed" position. I fould that i could release the vacumm by removing incoming fuel line from bulk head mounted filter. truck would run again for a few miles before the cycle started again.
                Fuel starvation!
I went through a lot of head scratching and fixes until i had enough and removed tank from car and cleaned out with fresh diesel and a bottle brush. found the small plastic filter cloged with a gelly like flakey gloop.
I also went to the trouble of cutting a hole in car body below backs seats to gain access to tank suction lines - to save the bother of removing tank in future.
I had to clean this filter a number of times before finally binning it and fitting a glass bowl strainer in the engine bay.

Try filling your tank to the top then back blowing your fuel line( to disperse any gunk on in tank filter.
                good luck

Also, now I know that I am getting fuel to the filter, I pulled the pipe off the heat exchanger that goes to the fuel pump and pumped the primer.
It took a good few pumps but eventually got pretty healthy squirts of fuel so that at least seems to rule out a problem with the heat exchanger

Jaky Cakes. Many thanks. This is what I've wondered as I often find flakes of what I think are Sterol Glycerides in my Surf filter (despite filtering the veg to 1 micron) which has meant that I've wanted to clean the tank for ages.

Now I've managed to pull fuel to the filter I was wondering if maybe this isn't the case but I'll try and get an air line onto the fuel line and give it a blow.

How much of a pain is dropping and cleaning the tank?

I had the white flakes dispite very fine filtering. the flakes are fats ( took a sample and heated - they melted) the flakes start off extremely (sub-micron) small - but seem to stick together and form bigger flakes once in tank - possibly from the heat and pressure from fuel pump - as some fuel gets returned to tank from injectors - so you'll always get the flakes.

Tank removal ain't that hard - just messy - drain it first!
reftting is easier with two people - or if like me - you have over developed abdominals - you can rest tank on stomach to offer it back into place!!

                      good luck!

Your timing is ok, ignore all the tippex, the notch in the front of cam gear at 12 o'clock and notch on the back of pump gear at 2ish o'clock lined up with the marks of the block behind the gears.

Then check the notch on the crank pulley lines up with hte pointer (but you can't alter it without stripperd motor down so should be ok)

(FFS don't try and turn the cam gear to move it!!!! )

My truck suffers from the filter in tank blocking up, I get as miss above 2000rpm att first and eventually it dies. I normally pull into a garage and blow air line down pipe from tank to filter, or blow down by mouth if stuck somewhere.

It does it every 3-4 months.

Why would that suddenly happen though?

                                head gasket failure.

3.0's hate to start with any compression loss, seen it on two trucks in the past.
