right went to my local friendly Lithuanian mechanic, he reckons it torque converter, he hadnt inspected it but seems very positive to it being that..... is it plausible that i am going to have to give him €300 for my reverse gear back????

It'll either be the reverse band or the valve/cylinder that engages the reverse band.
In most auto transmissions, there are two bands. The bands in a transmission are, literally, steel bands that wrap around sections of the gear train and connect to the housing. They are actuated by hydraulic cylinders inside the case of the transmission.
Now either the atf isn't reaching the valve/cylinder (blockage) or the band has worn down too far (or needs adjusting), and can't 'grab' the gear train.. I've never opened up a Surf's auto 'box to have a look, so can't be 100% but it does seem the likely cause of your loss of reverse.
Could probably be sorted without dropping the transmission.

So what was the outcome? i've just linked this thread to the modeling site as a guy there has just lost reverse on his Jag, (automatic)this was after haveing a "boy racer" moment and flooring it, then lost rev, so i wondered if it was possibly kick down related as Big bob's was messing with his too,
i know mine takes a fair few revs to get it going backwards comeing out the garage (slightly uphill) and a fair few revs to get it going anywhereToo young to die and too old to give a toss

Popeye.. I dont know if this applies to other Jags (Maybe TinTin can shed some light on it.. )
But i know my XJ8 has a 'sealed for life' gearbox.. Which basically means it has a very short life as you can't change the fluid!
That could be part of his problem?!
