    Gordon you can drive a 3rd gen in 4wd on the road as they have a centre locking diff. {don't lock this on road}
    You can press the 4wd button on the move at low speed.
    You must top and select neutral to engage the 4wd locked high or low options on the transfer box selector {small gear stick}
    You can also select H2wd, H4wd, H4wd locked, L4wd locked

    DONT DRIVE on the road with the centre diff locked i.e the small gear stick in 4wd locked position.

    The selector for you i.e 2nd gen driver is on the wrong side

    Glad you have seen the light.

            Albannach was commenting that if it does not have the multi option, then you should not drive it in 4wd on tarmac, in the same way you wouldn't on a 2nd gen.

              All 3rd gens have a centre diff, coils front and back the chassis shared with a colarado landcrusier as well as the engine, steering rack not box. They are not essentially a 2nd gen.
              Trust me if he meant differant he would have been at my door correcting me

                OH and listening to the earlier posts< I did engage the centre diff on the road but only twice for about 20 metres each time. You can also engage the 4wd in drive and not in Neutral.

                    Good job he is in Portugal then, or he would have been at your door. AvaBanana has a 3rd gen, which does not have a centre diff and which also does not have 16" wheels. Either that or hes got a 2nd gen with a 3rd gen body shell transplanted on it. In any case he has a vehicle which you would classify as 3rd gen if you saw it in a car park, yet which is missing many of the 3rd gen characterists, such as a centre diff and multi mode 4wd.

                      As I'm not going to have time to do a lift before the Wales run. What are the largest size tyres I can fit to a standard 3rd gen without worrying about them fouling on the arches, mud flaps, etc. Bearing in mind that I will be driving offroad.

                        As you say I think thats a 2nd gen with a body transplant.
                        The brakes must be differant as well as 15" wheels wont clear my brake calipers.

                          Probably whats on it now, 265/70/16 ??? Ive got 265/75/16 on mine with no fouling but theyre not far away from getting the front bumper. I would guess that on a bit of rough and bouncy offroad stuff Id be getting the occasional clash.

                          PS. Congrats on your purchase. Wont be long before the tractor drivers are outnmbered at this rate. Waiting patiently for the Foties, hope youve got the sliejka apparat all charged up.

                              Do yourself a favour & get 265/75r16's. I got kumho KL71's (brilliant MT's) at this size a few months ago & wish i'd gotten even bigger tyres as i now have a 2.5" coil spacer lift & plan on getting a body lift.
                              265/70's will look small if you get a lift.

                                No it's not.

                                Life is not black and white.

                                It is a 3rd Gen, but without the centre diff. I'll put a linky to the thread of when I bought it.
