i know the very first of the 3rd gens were basic compared to the slightly later ones as Ava_Banana says.I think its the later N reg 3rd gens that actually changed tho.
The early 3rd gens basically had the lift up tailgate and maybe one or two other bits different from the 2nd gens and then later added the centre diff

No offence meant to anyone .

Here's the linky from when I first bought my 3rd gen

      http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ad.php?t=51662

So far everything about it has been 3rd Gen (chassis, body, electrics etc, etc) except the size of the wheels (and presumably brakes.......although it is a very tight fit inside the back of the wheels) and the lack of centre diff.

One day I'll bring it along to a meet so people can have a look.

You are correct sir, i did a bit of research on ava's surf cos nothing added up, no diff, no plastic & on 15" rims.

Quite rare, probably because they did'nt make many before they moved onto the one we all recognise now.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Does it say KZN185 on the VIN plate? If it does then it's a 3rd gen.

Maybe it should be called a Toyota Hilux 'Cusp'
