Unfortunatley this is how sufferers are treated. I was held in the second to bottom group for two years, and my symtoms are very slight (they did however correct their error and move me to the top group for my GCSE's, when I hadn't even covered that cirriculum level).Originally posted by MattF View PostHave I questioned anyones education? I think you'll find not. Why do people 'interpret' rather than just reading what is actually written?
It can be overcome to a certain extent, but then it can't. When I have lost (I think this is the best description for you to understand it) a spelling I can not find it, not with all the electronic gadgets or dictionarys in the world. When this happens I try to use a different word so people don't notice, or worse case ask for help, and the reason for not asking for help is because people always treat you as if your thick if you can't spell, they rip into you, give "witty" (snide) replies.
Don't ever trust what you see from experts, they are normally written by some failed teacher.
I hope this helps you abit.Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

Sort of a disassociation? Along the lines of the word and the spelling don't seem to go together when you think of one or the other, so the word practically becomes meaningless?Originally posted by Maverick View PostIt can be overcome to a certain extent, but then it can't. Just on that point Mav, I wasn't, (and apologise if it sounded that wayWhen this happens I try to use a different word so people don't notice, or worse case ask for help, and the reason for not asking for help is because people always treat you as if your thick if you can't spell, they rip into you, give "witty" (snide) replies.

Indeed it does.I hope this helps you abit.
Obviously, when someone hasn't personally encountered, (or suffered from, in this case), something, then the only source of reference is either from people with personal knowledge of it or from 'official' documentation. From what you say though, it sounds like the official reference isn't always reliable either.

I can understand where you're coming from if that's how annoying it is, btw. I've honestly said a few times that I'll throttle the next person who inteprets rather than listens to what I say, so I don't envy you that constant infuriation.Originally posted by Maverick View PostUnfortunatley this is how sufferers are treated.

That is an absolutely spot for me. Then there is when a word doesn't look right so you use an alternative only to find the spelling was correct, or worse still when it looks correct only to find latter that you were wrong.Originally posted by MattF View PostSort of a disassociation? It wasn't aimed at yourself, and I agree that some use dyslexia as an excuse, but with the recent picking up on threads will result in some just not posting for fear of riddicle.Originally posted by MattF View PostJust on that point Mav, I wasn't, (and apologise if it sounded that way

Matt and Mav, you're singing from the same hymn-sheet here, right?
I've kept quiet on this for fear of offending people, but for what it's worth, I'm with you both - diagnosed mildly dyslexic when I was about 10, and given a bit extra push through school, I still do the disassociation thing plenty often enough, but also know the value of good communication.
So for anyone that's ever typed 'dos ne1 no how 2...' and then blamed it on the dyslexia (and that's a lot of people on this forum), wise up. The problem is the lazy inability to think things through and learn how to phrase a sentence, use grammar, punctuation and decent vocabulary. Not dyslexia.
Occasionally missing/confusing words, misspellings that a spell-checker can't pick up on, stammering/confusion looking for words when you're speaking, fair enough. Laziness, not fair enough. Ok so I'll never have the dry, sardonic wit of John Cleese, but there's no excuse for illiteracy.
Now, bring on the spelling nazis to find the mistakes in this post

Even I suffer from that one on occasion.Originally posted by Maverick View PostThen there is when a word doesn't look right so you use an alternative only to find the spelling was correct, or worse still when it looks correct only to find latter that you were wrong.
There are certain times when I do refer to the dictionary due to a word seeming wrong when I've written it. There was one notable time when, for the life of me, I couldn't remember the correct spelling for, (of all things), 'box'.
That's one thing I've specifically not done in the past, so hopefully people won't have that fear.It wasn't aimed at yourself, and I agree that some use dyslexia as an excuse, but with the recent picking up on threads will result in some just not posting for fear of riddicle.
I just had a rare hissy fit over the amount of times it seems misplacenly used as an excuse. Apologies if I did cause offence to anyone, btw.
Thankyou for the explanation.I'll get off my box now and let you all have a rest, but thanks for understanding Matt.
I honestly do hope so. I don't mind being classed as blunt, (or possibly some name even less desirableOriginally posted by adpsimpson View PostMatt and Mav, you're singing from the same hymn-sheet here, right?
), but I always try to correct things if I'm plain wrong, or my understanding is wrong
