1959 Ford Prefect - 4 door with 1172 Sidevalve engine. Drove it back from the garage, rebuilt the engine, spend 3 years doing stuff on it, learnt to weld etc. Then the Chassis rail rotted and as it was a semi unibody construction it was toast so I scrapped it. Cost me £12 to have it taken away too. Sold the engine and gearbox later for a profit on what the car cost me (£30) and what the engine rebuild cost me (£150).

First car I really had on the road was a 1967 Mini 850 which I restored and fitted a 998 Stage 3 engine in it. Went like absolute stink and looked great in the BMC racing colours (Red with a white roof). Even sourced some of the original Cooper racing stickers on it. With a fully balanced engine, it redlined at 9500rpm and with the straight through racing exhaust it sounded like all the banshees from hell had come out to play.

    Cheers

Mine was a 1974 Ford Cortina MkIII - the one below the base model. It had a 1300cc engine and only two dials in the cabin - and both of those were broken.

Good cars though Cortinas - I've had 3 of them!

First car was a Hillman Imp . Lowered with 'Monte Carlo' suspension , twin carbs , Janspeed exhaust and wide Wolfrace wheels , 13" rear , 12" front . Loads of understeer even with the race track suspension , but did out manuvere a few people until straight lines when everyone just disappeared in front of me . Wanted to fit an Escort engine to the transaxle but did not know how to do it in those days . Would have a go know .

I tended to be a bit greedy and have 2 cars at once . I had a mk1 Cavalier Sport hatch (Manta) , Dolly Sprint (excellent car) , Mini Clubman , Opel Manta , 1951 Landrover S1 1600 full tilt , Triumph GT6 , Metro ,Talbot Sunbeam 1600 (rot box) Mk5 Cortina estate ,Mini 1000 , Opel Monza GSE , Bedford Astravan , Ford Transit mk2 and Lotus Elan +2 (still got this one)

A couple of others I may have forgotten about

Mine was an all black 1958 Standard 10. Cost me £50, took me and two mates, a Scout Bell tent, three camp beds and all the camping gear from Bristol to Porlock for a long (damp) weekend in 1969. Didn't try to take it up or down Porlock Hill though, especially as the brakes weren't that good. Sold it to a small backstreet garage about a year later for £7.50 as I bought a 1964 Ford Anglia 1000cc Estate for £250. That was about 4 months wages then.

First car I owned (well part owned) was a 2.0S capri that had a 3.1 full race tuned engine in it. Went like s**t of a shovel and left the 2.8i capri's for dead and you think the tail end on a surf is lively, you should have driven that.
First legal car I owned was a mazda 626
