In your new version, install Recovery Console (from your xp disk) and repair the old version from there at boot time.
    how d'i do dat??

also for whatever reason i just couldn't get it to find the existing xp install in order to repair it, and could see no other option but to do what i've done.

    cheers,

    Martin

PS. from the looks of it perhaps we should rebrand the forum. www.hiluxsurfITsupport.co.uk

      From a command prompt run: D:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

If D:\ isn't where your CD ROM is, change it to suit.

Once you get in there, log int to the old installation and perform a chkdsk /r on it.

Once done, re-boot and see if you can get into the original installation.

Don't mess around with boot sectors or anything fancy, they're OK.

What were you doing when you got the error?

              sorry,

i'd done all the bits you said fine, then rebooted and selected to start in recovery mode, then it gave me that message when it tried to start.

just did a quick search on google. i have a MESH pc, and it seems that someone else has had the same prob, cos thats the second link on google results!
