The point about 'urban 4x4's' is quite justified. There is no reason to drop kids to school in a 12mpg vehicle( why fill the governments pockets with the tax just for dropping the kids off ? ). They are shxt to park in town, they do have blind spots at the back. You do see plenty of X5's and Porsche Cayennes being driven completely crap by mums dropping the kids off. The people on the 'anti' site are focusing on them, ignoring loads of people who live in the country, use their 4x4's at the weekends for recreational stuff - camping / fishing / picking up logs etc etc...

That said I think the problem in the UK is (as always) the cost factors. Watch any US show and you'll see the people own multiple vehicles. Over here it's pretty hard to afford it. If car tax and insurance were cheaper then I'm sure most 4x4 owners would own 2 cars. 1 to commute with and 1 to 'go play' in. I'm kind of lucky in that I live in the sticks and my wife and I both commute so we need a spare vehicle in case one of ours breaks down. That's my surf.

What I'm trying to say is if we weren't taxed to hell then a lot of 4x4 owners would have a 'town car' rather than just run the 1 vehicle.

btw I get a lot more aggressive drivers up my axse in my 1.2 corsa than I do in the surf. Maybe bmw drivers are scared of 4x4 owners
