So do you reckon i could squeeze one of those Merlin spitfire engines in me surf and run it on pure silk worm pooh hand squeezed by nubile virgins from lesbania.....?

I agree with that, actually. It's a closed system and we can't put anything into it that wasn't there to start with. We will almost certainly kill ourselves pretty soon, but why does that matter?

These people annoy me because they seem to focus on one tiny thing that is actually fairly inconsequential. Why not ban streetlights, cows, central heating etc etc if you're trying to make an impact?

Apparently its the women who are the worst offenders in the cities....
They say they feel safe in a big 4x4.....
Why don't they really p!ss these guys off and start making big 2 wheel drive school run vehicles, that would make all the t-shirts out of date...ha ha...
A nice big pimped out X5 on 24" rims and a bull bar but only 2 wheel drive and at least 7 litres of lovely gas guzzling motor......

It's air conditioning that's causing all the hassle, have you felt how much heat they eject into the atmosphere? I've noticed there are more air con units in warmer places (Spain for example), perhaps if they switched them all off Spain would cool down?

                        My Twopenneth worth...

Having had various cars for years its the BMW/MERC/AUDI brigate that are the worst offenders, they jump in a high powered car and think the whole highway is theirs.

We recently sold one surf to buy an estima 8 seater (and still a 4x4) which we are now selling because I am sick of getting pushed off the road by morons in the above and more often Volkswagen 1.9TDI's. The missus does not feel safe in anything less that a full size 4x4 anymore. I've just come back to work after 2 weeks paternity leave so I have had a chance to collect my daughter from school. to get a parking space right outside the door mums are arriving in their various cars and parking with the engine ticking over for at least 1/2 hour, where I roll up in the surf, park where I can safely and stop the engine, who is causing the most polution?

Also if I bought another car for going to work, where would I park it, the road outside our house is already swamped with cars and I can get our 2 4x4's on the drive.

The anti 4x4 brigade are generally supported by what I call "the loony left", Socialist worker party members who think that everybody should abandon the pricipals of capitalism and go and live in Cuba..

Rant over, going back to work!!

Bl00dy h3ll [just encountered the obscenity filter...], talk about opinionated!

Think Wishbone hit the nail on the head - they are not objecting to folk buying the vehicle they need for their situation, they are objecting to folk buying the wrong tool for the job.

4x4s are less safe than small cars in an urban environment. That's a fact, no matter how they 'feel.' They do cause more pedestrian deaths, especially for children. That's also a fact.

They are capable of driving off road, pulling loads, carrying massive capacity and all the rest of it. That's a fact too.

They are often driven by morons who can't manoeuvre them, clog up roads (esp outside schools, shops etc) and will never even imagine taking them off road or otherwise using them as they were designed. Other cars are driven by morons too, but an insecure/uncertain driver choosing the largest vehicle going because they 'feel safer' is ridiculous on many levels.

So buy the vehicle for the job you'll be doing. That's why most people own a Surf, but there's no reason why I can't own a 4x4 for driving off road and still find driving the 1.5 kids 2 miles through town to the school in an X5 obscene.

And as for calling it envy... Get over it. Simply slinging mud and calling names will never address the very real problems caused by pollution and bad personal choices. Using accusing stereotypes is exactly what you're accusing them of doing, so why is it any better to do it back?

If anyone doubts global warming/environmental damage, go live in Africa for a year and see the people already routinely starving in previously fertile countries due to massively changing weather patterns. In 9 months while I lived in Tanzania recently, cost of food doubled to nearly a whole day of wages (read £50) for a kilo of rice.

Feel free to make choices based on your requirements, but to stick your head in the sand or sling mud back doesn't give anyone the moral high ground.

Its NOT fact! You're suggesting it's the vehicle that is dangerous. it's not. it is, and always will be the driver. Drive within the limits of a vehicle, it is as safe as any other. If not, buses etc should be absolutely lethal and therefore banned. An idiot driving any car at all is more dangerous than 'a 4x4'.

They are capable of driving off road, pulling loads, carrying massive capacity and all the rest of it. That's a fact too.

Absolutely. You just negated your previous argument.

So is a 42" telly 'obscene'? A small one recieves pictures and uses less electricity.

I personally would walk, but I have no problem with people who wish to drive. Perhaps the person in the X5 is on the way to work, and school is on the way?

Bad personal choice? Sell your Surf then. Its obviously a bad choice for the road. The excuse that you might go offroad now and again doesn't cut it TBH. If you REALLY think more than a fraction of a percent of the worlds pollution is caused by 4x4s, then you really need to think again.

If anyone doubts global warming/environmental damage, go live in Africa for a year and see the people already routinely starving in previously fertile countries due to massively changing weather patterns. No-one doubts global warming. What no-one has done yet is PROVED that it's due to 21st century choices, or indeed TOTALLY due to pollution. There is strong evidence that it is cyclic, and at least in part, natural. However, like any group with an axe to grind, facts are cherry picked to suit the aim.

Feel free to make choices based on your requirements, but to stick your head in the sand or sling mud back doesn't give anyone the moral high ground.
My choice was made on a requirement I no longer have. I dont use the truck offroad as much as I'd like, due to time and financial commitments. However, I'm keeping it, and I'll use it where and when I please, and will NOT be bullied by people who are only in possession of some of the facts, and ignore the ones that dont fit with their personal views.

I may well one day get rid, but I doubt I'll be buying a tiny vehicle. Hopefully, it'll be a V8 jag XK, until they are banned too

At least we get to have an argument now....

These people are nobs. I argee with them that some people do buy these vehicles for the wrong reasons, some can't drive them, many don't need them etc etc.

                              But....

What exactly has it got to do with them? They are genuinely mentally ill if they think that their opinion is more valid than anyone else's or that they have any right, or indeed purpose, to tell other people what to do. They aren't the police, they aren't the Government and they're not even a democratic majority; they are just some people who are looking for something to feel all important about. Personally, I think they need to show some humility and go back to making a living, looking after their children and thinking about what's happening now, not what might happen in 100 years time.

The Government has decided that vehivle emissions cause climate change. Whether they are correct or not, it's their job to do something about it. Consequently, they have put fuel duty and road tax up to make cars with higher emissions and bigger engines less attractive. That's why I sold my surf and, in fact, why I have no car at all these days; when I looked at the costs and the benefits, the costs won. For others, the benefits win and that's why they drive what they want. I certainly haven't changed my habits as a result of Sian Berry and her stupid patronising films. Indeed, as we have seen on many occasions, their campaigns make most 4x4 owners angry and more determined than ever to keep them.

Just to make a point on safety; A Daihatsu Terios, Ford Kuga, Honda CRV, Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Rav 4 all have higher NCAP pedestrian safety ratings than a Mini, a Chevrolet Matiz (which are impossible to see out of, by the way), A Citroen C1, C2 and C3, a Fiat 500, a Fiat Panda, a Ford Ka, a Mazda 2, a Nissan Micra, a Renault Clio etc etc etc. Oh, and a Toyota Pious.

And I definitely have the moral high ground over the anti 4x4 lobby because I have enough humility to know that I am a little man of no consequence and that I shouldn't be wasting my short life on telling other people what to do with theirs.
