Sancho... like the crystal ball! Nice touch..

As for the Surf, It will either be 180,000 or so little mileage its worth avoiding because everything will have siezed up!!

My rear windows are sluggish. They almost never get used so i think the rubbers are a bit 'iffy'.

Same with the rear window. When i got it, The window was very stiff. Some silicone grease sorted it untill the motor broke. But its an easy and cheap fix.

So haggle on the price fairly... say the window motor is £100 from roughtrax so you should get that off easy!! Then if it does go repair it in 10 minutes for next to nothing!

If everything else is good i'd go for it!!

I've heard that too, but I've yet to hear of anyone here that its actually happened to - and there's one or two Surf owners on this site... and if you're really that worried, just buy an external cooler and dont run the ATF through the rad - easy.

Heads? Buy a 3.0. Yes yes yes, any head can go, but the 3.0 is no worse than any other vehicle for head problems, whereas the 2.4 demonstrably is due to problems with the original 2.4 heads.

Land Rover spares are cheap due to economies of scale in manufacture. If there's a huge market for relacing broken parts, then replacements are cheap...

TBH, Surf spares are the cheapest spares I've ever bought for any car, and its the easiest car to work on I've ever owned (apart from my Pug 205). You just need to know where to buy them, and there'll always be someone on here who can point you in the right direction.

Oops, yes it was 180,000km not 18k, I'm old and entitled to a senior moment now and again.

Going to take a better look at it today, so will have more info later hopefully.
There's the possibility of a 97 year coming up which is mint, he may want around the 2k / 2.5k mark for that one if I can persuade him to part with it.

Thanks for the info so far, it's been a big help.

I'd go for the 3rd gen if i were you, nothing against 2nd gens though.

The 3rd gen is easier to get in & out of the boot if your useing it alot, & on most models "multi mode" you can have 4WD on all the time if you so desire.

Oh & make sure its the 3.0L, most are anyway.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Right, looks like I've bought a Surf, for better or worse.
              Details are year = 94 / 95, model = SSR X Limited, colour = black, engine = 3.0L, trans = auto, price = £1500,
Bad bits, scabby door bottoms on two doors, rear side windows slow, rear tailgate window propped up with stick, couple of dings (minor) on body work, Little mirror on wing broken ( but will remove anyway), rear bumper a little rough, alloys scabby. 202.000km
              Good bits,
I know the owner and have for quite a while, regularly serviced, new battery / cam belt / tyres/ some more bits I can't remember, IT'S BLACK , interior is mint, runs and drives perfectly, body is very tidy in general. COMPARED TO A DEFENDER IT'S LIKE SITTING ON A MAGIC CARPET.

Body work such as door bottoms, remove mirror etc will cost nothing, I just get the paint, wheels I will probably do myself (gallon of Allibright and a mop in the air router), I shall investigate the rear window and silicone spray the side windows (AFTER painting). Rear bumper looks expensive

So, all in all I'm happy I think, any opinions anyone (good or bad, just let me have it)

If anyone (no names here ) wishes to pick me up on punctuation please feel free

              Rod
