As for the autobox... never had an issue arrise here about one losing fluid etc.

To be honest it all depends on what your going to use the truck for.

Dare i say it but a Disco 300tdi aint bad for just cruising around in with no special needs. I need to lug large stuff around at times an the disco fell short of the mark!
Its nice having a 7 seater... But in the same i dont miss it that much.
Just make sure whatever you get its black!

if i was you i would go for a surf
i just put mine through its pases off road against a 3ltr disco
my auto gearbox has suffered a little
the disco is dead only thing working is the engine
diffs full of water and flucked
gearbox just makes crunching noises
iam not lieing mate he has replaced most the car its now dead again
my surf is still going just slight damaged to the gear box

if its head problems thats got ya thinking
get one that been done
my 2.4 td has taken hammer off me for 5 years on road and off
with no engine or head problems
disco well that did 10 mounths

Thanks for the info, how do I find one off the boat ? Where do I look as I was going to just look around, try a few and buy the best I can afford.

When i say just off the boat i did'nt mean stand by the docks & wait, i ment one thats not been in the country long "say 12 months or so". There is plenty about at moment & its a buyers market so you should pick up a belter for very little money. Keep an eye on here aswell cos they always crop up + people on the forum tend to look after them really well.

Judwak, big difference is, 4 speed ZF auto = £200. Diffs = £50 ea. Complete axles app £150 ea.


Rod, will be using it for general trolling about, family car with a bit of towing of caravan (I'm old now) Used to a lot of modified trials and kept one (the last to be built) trialer. If I take it up again, or the son does, I shall be towing that. Also like a bit of green laning but very gentle non damaging (you can't off road a road motor, the two don't mix well)

Anyway, it's good of you all to answer but I'm still not convinced about a surf, while looking for answers on the net a problem with auto boxes drinking coolant through the fluid cooler / rad cropped up, apparently a very very expensive problem to fix. Is this a Surf problem or Colarado problem.

Old cars just let go after a while. Anything you buy will have the same issues.

There are occasional reports of the ATF and coolant mixing, but it's no biggy. Just needs a new rad. I can't think of anyone that it's actually happened to recently.

IMHO you don't want one off the boat. The japs send us their dogs and you'd be better off finding one where some other poor bugger has spent the money sorting it out.
